ACS 602. Teaching American Culture Studies
Introduction to the pedagogy of culture studies. Designed for those currently teaching or planning to teach American Culture Studies, Women's Studies, and Ethnic Studies courses. 3 Credits.

ACS 603. Supervised Assistantship
American Culture Studies graduate students employed as teaching/research assistants in ACS or other designated department/program are assigned to work with experienced faculty on a tutorial basis. Includes close supervision of assignments, testing, grading, and classroom methods. Prerequisite: consent of ACS program director. May be repeated. Hours may not be counted toward the degree. 2 Credits.

ACS 605. Lecture Series
Participation in American Culture Studies interdisciplinary lecture series. Course is organized in coordination with the Institute for the Study of Culture and Society. May be repeated. 1 Credit.

ACS 630. Methods and Theories
Historical perspectives on American culture studies; theories and concepts of culture relative to American culture studies; new trends and directions in scholarship. 3 Credits.

Study of selected topics or subject areas which are particularly suited to an interdisciplinary approach and treatment. May be repeated. 3 Credits.

Individual study of some phase of American culture not ordinarily offered in curriculum. Prerequisite: consent of instructor and approval by Executive Committee. May be repeated. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 687. Independent Study in American Culture Studies
Supervised independent completion of a project other than readings. Graded S/U. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 689. Internship
Supervised experience within setting or institution related to an area of American culture studies. Must be approved by graduate coordinator prior to registration. Students may enroll up to six credit hours; however, only three hours are counted toward the degree. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 691. Directed Research in American Culture Studies
Supervised independent completion of a project other than readings in an area of American culture. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 698. Readings for Comprehensive Examination
Supervised independent readings in preparation for the master's comprehensive examination. 1 to 12 Credits.

ACS 699. Thesis Research
Credit for thesis study. Students may enroll in up to 12 credit hours; however, only three hours are counted toward the M.A. degree. 1 to 12 Credits.

ACS 720. History of American Studies
Earliest efforts to define an "American character"; institutionalization of American studies; relationship of American studies to Cold War; rise and fall of myth symbol school; challenges to white-male hegemony from women and minority scholars. 3 Credits.

ACS 730. Seminar in Theories of American Culture Studies
Examination of theories of culture as applicable to study of American culture. Review of American culture scholarship. 3 Credits.

ACS 740. Genealogy of American Culture
Survey of central cultural and intellectual paradigms in American life. Examines both hegemonic and counter-hegemonic cultural movements and intellectual traditions in their social-historical contexts. Credit allowed for only one of ACS 740, HIST 740. 4 Credits.

ACS 745. Publication and Professional Development
Presents a range of professional development activities. Focus of course is development of academic writing and professional publication skills. 3 Credits.

ACS 750. Key Debates in Cultural Studies
Examines contemporary intellectual debates, and new trends and directions in the field of cultural studies. 3 Credits.

ACS 755. Field Work in American Culture
Independent project under faculty supervision. May consist of participant observer or similar anthropological research, cultural resources inventory or survey, archaeological project, or similar supervised field work. 3 Credits.

ACS 760. Critical Approaches in Film Studies
Introduction to critical approaches and debates in the discipline of Cinema Studies. Provides an overview of the theoretical constructs central to contemporary film and media study. 3 Credits.

ACS 780. Seminar in American Culture Studies
An examination of a topic in American culture studies which is particularly appropriate for an interdisciplinary approach and treatment. 3 Credits.

ACS 782. Topics in American Culture Studies
Examination of selected topics or subject areas which are especially appropriate for an interdisciplinary approach and treatment. May be repeated. 3 Credits.

ACS 785. Directed Readings in American Culture Studies
On demand. Individual or group study of some phase of American culture not ordinarily offered in curriculum. Prerequisite: consent of instructor and approval of Executive Committee. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 787. Independent Study in American Culture Studies
Supervised completion of a project other than readings. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 789. Internship in American Culture Studies
An internship at an appropriate institution or organization concerned with production, collection, recording, preservation, presentation, study, or dissemination of American culture. Proposed field placement registration must be approved by director prior to registration. May be taken for up to six hours, but only three hours count toward graduation. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 791. Directed Research in American Culture Studies
Individual problems in advanced research not involved in dissertation and ordinarily not offered in curriculum. Prerequisite: consent of instructor and approval of Executive Committee. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 797. Practicum in American Culture
Group field work emphasizing hands-on experience with the materials and methods of recording, preserving, and/or disseminating artifacts of American culture. 3 Credits.

ACS 798. Readings for Core/Preliminary Examination
Supervised independent readings in preparation for the doctoral preliminary examination. 1 to 12 Credits.

ACS 799 - Dissertation Research
Students must register for minimum of 16 hours in this course while working on doctoral dissertation. 1 to 16 Credits.

 


ACS 200. Introduction to American Culture Studies

Regional, ethnic and economic aspects of American national experience as reflected in verbal, visual and material artifacts. Culture theory and models used to examine selected topics and problems. Required of all American culture studies majors. Applicable to the BG Perspective (general education) humanities and arts requirement. Approved for Distance Ed. 3 Credits.

ACS 230. Issues in American Civilization
Characteristically American themes, issues or problems reflecting relationships among ideas, values, traditions, events and personalities. Subject matter designated in schedule of classes; may be repeated once if topics differ. 3 Credits.

ACS 250. Cultural Pluralism in the United States
Interdisciplinary exploration of race, ethnicity, class, gender and sexual orientation in the United States, emphasizing imaginative expressive forms, such as fiction, poetry, film and the visual arts. Applicable to the BG Perspective (general education) cultural diversity in the United States requirement. Approved for Distance Ed. 3 Credits.

ACS 252. Indigenous Cultures of North America
Field-based overview of the variety of indigenous North American cultures, both past and present, with emphasis on the use of archaeological record to interpret past lifeways. Focus on each culture's interactions with the physical and biological world. Taught in the field as part of a nine week field/camping trip across the United States. Corequisites: GEOL 250, GEOL 251, and ENVS 253 with permission of instructor. Honors credit optional. Applicable to the BG Perspective (general education) cultural diversity in the United States requirement. 3 Credits.

ACS 300. Interpretations of American Culture
Approaches to the interpretive understanding and appreciation of American culture and society. Such theories as cultural studies, frontier thesis, feminism, critical race theory, cultural pluralism, etc. are incorporated into the interpretive study of various American cultural practices. Prerequisite: junior standing or consent of instructor. May be repeated once if topics differ. Applicable to the BG Perspective (general education) humanities and arts requirement. Approved for Distance Ed. 3 Credits.

ACS 338. American Environmental History
Three centuries of changing American attitudes and actions toward natural environment, rise of conservation movement, and development of ecological perspective. Prerequisite ENG 112. Credit allowed for only one of HIST 338, ACS 338. 3 Credits.

ACS 400. The Literature of American Culture Studies
Interdisciplinary approach to the institutional study of American culture. Course focus is on American culture, society, economy, politics, media, or other institutions from a broad interdisciplinary perspective. Prerequisite: senior standing or permission of instructor. May be repeated once if topics differ. 3 Credits.

ACS 405. Qualitative Research Methods
Introduces students to modes of qualitative social research commonly found in fields of ethnic studies and American culture studies. Focus on data gathering process as well as data analysis. Credit allowed only for one of ETHN 405, ACS 405. 3 Credits.

ACS 499. Capstone Tutorial in American Culture Studies
Independent study in preparation of ACS senior capstone project. Prerequisites: senior standing; tutor must be ACS joint-appointment or affiliated faculty member. Proposal, signed by proposed tutor, must be submitted for approval by undergraduate advisor in American Culture Studies prior to semester in which tutorial begins. 3 Credits.

ACS 580. The Literature of American Studies
Study of the dominant paradigms of American culture studies as reflected in key works of American studies scholarship. Emphasis on the development of the discipline, its characteristic methodologies and its relationship to traditional humanities and social sciences disciplines. 3 Credits.

ACS 586. Workshop in American Culture Studies
Workshops designed for current topics and issues of an interdisciplinary nature. Topics vary from semester to semester. 3 Credits.
