The Lunatic House was built in 1885. It was first occupied by eight patients. At least four rooms had bars over the windows, for the violent inmates. All the rooms downstairs had metal doors with peep holes, so the workers could observe the inmates to make sure they were not hurting themselves. Two rooms still have bars over the windows. Later, this building, nicknamed the 'Jail House' because of the barred windows, was used as housing for the men at the Infirmary after the 1930s, because by 1900 special homes and institutions were built for the insane.
