While using student response systems (that is, "clickers") to facilitate student engagement in classes is nothing new, it is still something that is often cumbersome and expensive. Regardless of whether or not the actual clickers are purchased institutionally, by department, by individual faculty (by way of a grant), or by students, someone is still paying for these devices. All too often the default solution is to pass this cost on to our students. Or, if that isn't the case, faculty can instead lug around a briefcase full of clickers and needlessly  devote class time to manually assigning them to students, then manually checking the devices back in at the end of class. Surely there must be a better way. 

Luckily, there is. Several services exist that allow our students to use their cell phones--either regular or smart phones--as virtual clickers. In most cases, they can even use their laptops or tablets, as well, in the event they don't have their phones at hand. This workshop will explore using one such service, Poll Everywhere, to prompt student engagement and active learning in face-to-face, hybrid, and even online classes.
