Overview
The members of the Creating Digital Collections for Teaching, Learning, and Research Community will have the opportunity to conceptualize, describe, organize, and upload digital content within the BGSU/OhioLINK Digital Resource Commons or other appropriate digital platforms. Through this experience faculty will be able to design a digital collection that will enhance student learning and promote faculty research agendas.
Description
Within this learning community, faculty interested in creating digital collections for teaching or research, hosting open access scholarly journals, or similar digital projects, will be offered the opportunity to work with University Libraries faculty to develop and upload their digital content within the BGSU/OhioLINK Digital Resource Commons (DRC) or other appropriate available digital repositories. Collections could include, but are not limited to: audio, video or image files; open access journals; primary sources; reports; current research; and conference proceedings, student projects or theses. Current OhioLINK DRC content can be reviewed at: http://drc.ohiolink.edu/ and http://drc.library.bgsu.edu
Participants will discover digital collection and repository issues related to copyright compliance and Creative Commons licensing and best practices in creating and describing digital content. Broader scholarly communication discussions will be held as well. Participants will also explore and compare other digital content platforms such as Omeka, Open Journal Systems, and the Internet Archive. Progress within the learning community will be demonstrated by participation in the BGSU Teaching and Learning Fair, spring semester 2010. At the conclusion of the academic year participants will have explored issues related to digital repositories and created a digital community within the BGSU DRC or elsewhere that supports either their teaching or research agenda.
About the DRC: In conjunction with OhioLINK, BGSU University Libraries has created a Digital Resource Commons (DRC) http://drc.library.bgsu.edu/ . This repository was developed to collect, preserve, organize, share, and distribute BGSU's digital collections. A community, as defined by OhioLINK, is a group within a university or among universities, such as a school, department, institute or center that produces research or educational materials. The communities in the DRC are designed to enhance open access and to advance scholarly communication through the dissemination of historical, research-based, instructional and creative digital materials.
All proposed digital collections or DRC communities should have long-term stability. DRC communities will assume responsibility for setting policy and standards for contributions of content, access to resources, and terms of use under the stewardship of the community.
