Pragmatic Practices
While grounding pedagogy in theory is important, Teaching Assistants more often are interested in how to implement educational
practices that will result in student learning. In this workshop, we will focus on the practical side of teaching. First,
we will talk about student as learners. Participants will learn about different tests that can help identify the type of learners
in their classes and how to engage using learning styles. We will use Chickering and Gamson’s 7 Principles for Good Practice
to discuss realistic ways to: 1. Encourage Contact Between Students and Faculty, 2. Develop Reciprocity and Cooperation Among
Students, 3. Encourage Active Learning, 4. Give Prompt Feedback, 5. Emphasize Time on Task, 6. Communicate High Expectations,
and 7. Respect Diverse Talents and Ways of Learning. Finally, participants will discuss specific situations and topics relevant
to their teaching practices and pedagogy such as dealing with stress as an instructor, using questions effectively in the
classroom, the first day of class, lesson planning procedures, grading practices and culturally effective communication. This
workshop will be guided by participants’ interests and attendees will walk away with techniques sure to improve teaching and
learning.
