Active Learning and the Transition to Digital

How are we integrating information and communication technologies in our classrooms, both real and virtual, to better facilitate learning and student engagement?  What decisions are we making certain tools and delivery mechanisms, and either intentionally or by omission not using others?  What are appropriate levels of instructional technology for our classes toward this end?

Applying Learner-Centered Teaching Practices for curricular and co-curricular learning

In support of students’ achievement of the University Learning Outcomes, the BGSU community employs learner-centered activities and innovative methods to assess learning. “Applying Learner-Centered Teaching Practices” will support members as they develop and deliver learner-centered activities; therefore, individuals who want to incorporate more learner-centered activities in their curricular and co-curricular teaching should apply for membership and collaborate in this interdisciplinary environment. A full description of the University Learning Outcomes can be found here: http://www.bgsu.edu/catalog/University/University8b.html

Cultivating STEM Student Motivation, Engagement, & Learning

Members of this learning community have the common interest of engaged teaching and learning pedagogies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.  The members design, study, and revise their learning environments to optimize and cultivate student motivation, engagement, and learning during their membership to this two-year learning community.

Integrating Publication and Undergraduate Learning

Integrating Publication and Undergraduate Learning is dedicated to the idea that scholarship and pedagogy inform one another in generative and efficacious ways.  Particularly geared toward the Humanities and Social Sciences, we foster an environment of scholarly exchange with the shared goals of publishing our own work and serving as a resource for undergraduate learning and understanding of writing for publication.

Library e-Tools for Teaching, Learning, & Research

The members of the Library e-Tools Learning Community will have an opportunity to explore the newer, cutting-edge technologies available through University Libraries and OhioLINK.  Knowledge and use of these e-tools will enhance faculty teaching and research as well as bolster student learning.

Pedagogy and Scholarship in Second Life

The Pedagogy and Scholarship in Second Life Learning Community is comprised of a diverse group of BGSU faculty and focuses on pedagogy and scholarship using the Second Life virtual world as a platform.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

The purpose of our learning community is to value, encourage, and engage in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).  Our learning community members will research and discuss professional practices leading to the development of scholarly teaching and enriched, meaningful student learning.

Service-Learning

Co-sponsored by the Office of Service-Learning, this learning community supports the creation of high quality courses using service-learning pedagogy addressing the development of personal and social responsibility and civic learning.  Members will expand their understanding of service-learning pedagogy, dialogue with peers engaged in course re/design, and participate in an on-going support network during course delivery.  Contact Jane Rosser, OSL Director (jrosser@bgsu.edu), or Aisha McGriff, Faculty Development Coordinator (aisham@bgsu.edu) for more information.  Office of Service-Learning, 315 University Hall.

Social Learning

This Learning Community will explore social learning as a strategy to energize student engagement with academic content by building social relationships and a sense of responsibility to a classroom community.
