An Introduction to Problem-based and Inquiry-based Learning
The Boyer Commission Report, “Reinventing Undergraduate Education” (1998), asserts that all universities have the obligation to provide “opportunities to learn through inquiry rather than simple transmission of knowledge." Consider that if you are teaching inquiry your students will have an approach to learning that they can use long after they have graduated. “PBL is an active and iterative process that engages students to identify what they know, and more importantly, what they don't know.” (University of Delaware, PBL site) PLB started at McMaster University Medical School and is now used around the world at all levels of education. It is related to project-based-learning and inquiry-based learning, but it has its special pedagogical attributes that make it a distinctive learning experience. Using multiple resources, this discussion session will explore ideas for PBL and how and where IBL and PBL might be implemented.
