You may also need to attach a financial need statement to your scholarship application. This should be a brief explanation of your financial need and let the scholarship committee get to know you beyond what the numbers on your FAFSA report say. Here are some examples of what this statement could look like:

Financial Need Statement 1

"The financial burden of a college education is something that affects all students. I have chosen not to let the financial aspects of college dictate the educational path I choose. I transferred into the College of Technology as a sophomore, and because of this switch, I will not be able to complete my degree in four years. I realize that taking this additional time to complete my degree will place more of a financial responsibility on me, but I would much rather do something I love than graduate with a degree that I no longer have an interest in. I decided that the financial obligation I face is well worth the rewards of a degree in technology. I have incurred additional lab charges in my classes, but I believe these are well worth the experience and I do not want to forego the opportunities available to me simply because I will have additional loans."

Financial Need Statement 2

"My sister will be attending college next year and is receiving a lot less aid than we expected. Since I am an out-of-state student in a high-cost program, any aid I can receive will benefit not only me, but my sister and my parents. With this scholarship I hope to be able to afford to take summer classes, which will enable me to finish college earlier and will then allow my parents to focus on helping my sister achieve her educational goals."

Financial Need Statement 3

"Currently, my family is paying for me to go to college and for my mother to pursue a master’s degree. In the fall, one more of my siblings will be in college. Thanks to scholarships I have already received, I have been able to take advantage of co-op opportunities in the Chicago area rather than staying in my hometown. I am applying for this award because I hope to study abroad before I graduate, and this scholarship will help me achieve that goal. Studying abroad will mean that it will take me one additional semester to complete my degree, but the experience will be very valuable as I pursue my career in print media."
