Credit By Examination (CBE) |

An undergraduate student currently registered for at least two semester hours may gain credit by examination with the approval
of the student's dean and the department involved. The minimum registration level must be maintained for the entire term.
The student wishing credit in a course must not have enrolled in the course previously and must present sufficient evidence
of prior study or experience. The course cannot be a prerequisite for any course the student has completed.
To qualify for a CBE, you must be able to answer "YES" to all of the following:
- Was your work experience (which must be related to your current major) full-time (working at least 40 hours per week) and
continuous (with no breaks in between) for at least 12 months?
- Did your work experience occur after high school graduation and (preferably) related to your Associate Degree?
- Did your work experience (which must be related to your current major) occur prior to entering the College of Technology?
- Can you previous or current employer provide documentation of employment?
The following must be submitted in the CBE packet:
1. CBE Application/Cover Sheet (A copy can be found HERE)
2. Documentation of Previous Work Experience
- Letter(s) must verify your 12 month work experience and what duties you performed.
- Documentation must be on company letterhead from the company(ies) you are using for your CBE experience.
- Letter(s) must be signed & dated by a human resource manager, supervisor or other appropriate person.
3. Recommendation/Evaluation of Work Experience
To be completed by the company using one of the methods listed below:
- Formal company performance evaluation for continuous the 12 month period.
or
- Letter(s) of Reference (this can be incorporated as an additional paragraph in the letters of documentation defined above).
or
- Cooperative Education Performance Evaluation form. (Blank copies are available in the co-op office).
4. Cooperative Education Report

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you are completing a Credit By Exam (CBE) you MUST use the co-op report "CBE Report Format" link listed
above. Even though your CBE may be counting toward credit for a TECH 289, 389 or 489 co-op, you are required to use the CBE
Guidelines link above when completing the report portion of your CBE, not the TECH 289, 389 or 489 guidelines. PLEASE, if
you have any questions, contact our office immediately.
Submission Process
- The CBE application packet must be submitted for approval to the OCE during a semester in which you are already registered
for at least 2 semester hours of credit at Bowling Green State University.
- The completed packet must be submitted to:

- The packet must contain and be arranged (in order) the information covered HERE and outlined below:
1. CBE Application/Cover Sheet 2. Documentation of Previous Work Experience 3. Recommendation/Evaluation of Work Experience 4. Cooperative Education Report
- The approval process takes approximately 5 weeks. Upon approval, the OCE will send you a notification letter.
- An $80.00 processing fee will be added to your Bursar account after your CBE packet is submitted.
