Are you a pianist looking to further your skills? Do you like to surround yourself with other pianists and learn helpful tips to improve your musicianship? Join us for the SMI Piano Camp!
The SMI Piano Camp offers students the opportunity to study music in a stimulating environment under the tutelage of our distinguished piano faculty. This intensive program includes private and group lessons, master classes, ensembles, practice sessions, theory study and solo recital performances. Recitals and presentations by faculty and guests complete the activities. In addition, there are daily opportunities for social fun and recreation.
Preparation:
The piano camp is designed for students from ages 13-18. Conditional acceptance of students 12 years of age may be requested via the camp director. Students should prepare at least one solo piece for the first day of camp.
Guest Artist for 2013: Alan Chow Associate Professor of Piano at the Bienen School of Music, Northwestern University.
Acclaimed for his “elegant poetry and virtuosic fire," Alan Chow has won First Prize in the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, the UCLA International Piano Competition, and the Palm Beach Invitational International Piano Competition. Winner of the Silver Medal and Audience Favorite Prize at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, he was also a prizewinner in the William Kapell International Piano Competition.

The Dorothy M. Price scholarship requires an application form.

Concerts:
Duet Concert:
Upon arrival, each camper will be assigned a duet partner to study a four-hand piece. Students will collaborate for three days. This collaboration will culminate in a duet concert presented on Wednesday, June 19 at 8:00 p.m. in Bryan Recital Hall.
Final Concerts:
Two final concerts will be presented. These concerts are free and open to the public.
1. Thursday evening, June 20 at 8:00 p.m.
2. Friday morning, June 21 at 10:00 a.m.
Recreation Times:
A daily recreation time is scheduled for campers to enjoy the facilities at the BGSU Recreation Center, located right next to the music building.

Vocal Arts Camp
June 16-21, 2013
Do you have a passion for singing? Are you interested in developing your vocal skills? The SMI Vocal Arts Camp at BGSU is for you!
The purpose of the camp is simple: to help each student develop while nurturing your passion for singing. You will receive private lessons, attend vocal seminars, participate in master classes and attend recitals by faculty and staff. Because singing involves so many diverse skills, students will also explore other tools such as diction, vocal interpretation, audition techniques, stage deportment and basic musicianship skills. Each student will be provided with a firm foundation for healthy singing.
Preparation: High school students entering grades 10 through 12 with a strong interest and experience singing

String Camp

Are you a string student looking for a challenging atmosphere where you can improve on your skills? Join us this summer for the SMI String Camp at BGSU! As a violin, viola, cello or bass player, you will receive individual guidance from members of the talented string faculty at BGSU. Each student is assigned to a small chamber ensemble whether a duo, trio, quartet or even larger. A typical day could include small ensembles, an individual lesson, seminars, guest artists and student/ faculty performances. Students will have the opportunity to perform in the final Chamber Music Gala concert.
HONORS STRING QUARTET: Advanced students are encouraged to apply for the Honors String Quartet, a select group of two violins, one viola and one cello, who will receive specialized coaching with our faculty, a full scholarship, including room and board to the String Camp. Students wishing to apply for the Honors String Quartet must register and pay in full for the camp and submit a CD of a solo performance by May 15, 2013 to Professor Matthew Daline, College of Musical Arts, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH 43403. If selected, the student will receive a full refund of their fees.
Preparation: Students should have at least one year of middle school and/or high school string instruction. Students should prepare an etude and/or solo for placement in ensembles on the first day of camp.

Double Reed Camp
June 16-21, 2013
Join us this summer for Double Reed Camp!
Students will spend five fun-filled days learning how to make reeds, participating in bassoon and oboe ensembles, honing skills in playing techniques, and playing in master classes. Reed-making sessions will take you from the beginning stages of reed construction to putting the final touches on your existing reeds. Beginning reed makers will acquire the skills to become independent reed makers and students with reed making experience will become experts. Our talented BGSU double reed professors will guide you through the process. Ensemble parts will be handed out at camp and the week will culminate in a performance for parents on the final day.
Preparation: Tuition includes a materials fee for the cane and other supplies that will be provided for all students in the workshop. Tools and supplies will be available for student use, but please email the directors for information about tools you could purchase or arrange to borrow before camp. Students should bring their instruments as well as solos or etudes they are working on as there will be master classes and individual lessons.

SESSION TWO:
Flute Camp

Are you a high school flutist interested in a challenging atmosphere where you can improve your skills? Join us this summer for the SMI Flute Camp! You will receive guidance from Conor Nelson, Assistant Professor of Flute at BGSU; Elise Roy, a phenomenal contemporary music specialist, and other special guests. A typical day could include private lessons, seminars, master classes, flute choirs, guest artists or student/faculty performances. Classes will cover topics such as breathing sound, articulation, and technique. Each student will have the oppurtunity to perform on the final concert.
Preparation: Students should prepare an etude and/or solo for placement on the first day of camp.
Honors Recital: Interested in being part of the Honors Recital? Students are encouraged to audition to perform a solo piece of their choosing for the final recital. Students selected for his honor must apply ahead of time by submitting a link to a recording on YouTube (audio only is acceptable) to conorn@bgsu.edu by May 15, 2013. Please indicate the composer and title of the work. Recording need not to include piano accompaniment.

Brass Camp

Recording Studio Camp

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes when your favorite recording artist goes into the studio to record their next album? Do you want to learn about microphones, mixing consoles, and digital recording? Experience it first hand by attending BGSU's Recording Studio Camp! Campers, ages 15 to 18, will get plenty of hands on experience by recording a number of songs using campers as the musicians. You will get the studio experience from "both sides of the glass."
Preparation: No prior technical knowledge is necessary, so don't let that stop you from registering.

Musical Theatre Camp

Do you have a passion for musical theatre? Do you want to improve your performance skills, get ready to audition for the next school musical, or build your confidence?
The SMI Musical Theatre Camp is a unique opportunity for talented high school vocalists entering grades 10 through 12, that will help you strengthen your performing skills through movement classes, vocal warm-ups, improvisation, scene work, master classes and more. Housed in the Wolfe Center for the Arts, a brand new state-of-the-art theatre complex, students will work with BGSU faculty and guest instructors for the week, then perform a final concert in one of our new theatres.
At this year’s camp we are delighted to have guest artist Jody Madaras from the first national tour of The Drowsy Chaperone.
Madaras also co-conceived the new 1940’s musical revue All Hands on Deck, a nostalgic, patriotic tribute featuring 42 of America’s favorite songs. Musical theatre campers will not only receive two tickets to the July 3rd performance at Kobacker Hall but also have the opportunity to audition for a guest spot in the show!

Dorothy M. Price Scholarships
Dorothy M. Price, a long-time friend of the College of Musical Arts, is interested in educational opportunities for young people and through a generous gift has provided funding for a special scholarship of $150 for each of the camps. Students are selected based on talent and financial need. Students must first register for the camp with full payment and submit their scholarship application. If selected, the student will receive a reimbursement check after camp has started. Deadline for applications is May 22, 2013. Click here for the application.
Junior Audition Day Scholarships
Students who are in their junior year of high school can attend our College of Musical Arts Junior Audition Day where they can go through a mock audition with our music faculty. Students who audition may be recommended for scholarship to attend the Summer Music Institute. These scholarships are typically $100. Students must first register for the camp with full payment. OMEA Music Teacher Scholarship
Music teachers who attend the OMEA Conference may enter a drawing to receive a $100 coupon for one of their students to attend the Summer Music Institute. Teachers should stop by the BGSU Booth at the OMEA conference to enter the drawing. The students must register and pay in full for the camp. The coupon will allow the student to receive a reimbursement check after camp has started.
Dubois Competition Scholarships for pianists
Students who enter the Dubois Piano Competition may be selected for a scholarship to attend the Summer Music Institute Piano Camp. The student must register and pay in full for the camp. Director's Scholarship
At the discretion of each director, directors may offer scholarships to exceptionally talented students they have heard at auditions or contests. Students must register for the camp will full payment. If selected, the student will receive a reimbursement check after camp has started.
Community Area Scholarships
Students are encouraged to apply for scholarships from band, vocal, or orchestra boosters or community foundations in their area. Many offer summer scholarships for students to attend such camps. Students must register for the camp will full payment to BGSU. Community organizations will need to reimburse the student personally.

DURATION
All camps are 5-day camps with the exception of the Musical Theatre Camp which is a 6-day camp
Check-in for camps is between 1:00-3:00 p.m. the Sunday of the camp. Most camps will check-out between 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Friday. Specific schedules for each camp will be available closer to camp start.
EXCEPTION: Musical Theatre Camp check-in is between 1:00-3:00 p.m. on June 27 with pick up July 3 between 1:00-3:00 p.m. All Hands on Deck performance at 6:00 p.m. that evening is part of the camp.

CANCELLATION POLICY
A registration is considered cancelled ONLY if notification is sent via email to the Administrative Director of the Summer Music Institute, Susan Hoekstra, (shoekst@bgsu.edu) by the responsible parent/sponsor who signs the agreement. Camp fees, excluding the non-refundable $50 administration fee, are fully refundable if cancellation is received at least 14 days (2 weeks) prior to the start of the camp you are registered for.
Cancellations received less than 14 days prior are subject to the following:
- No refund on resident costs which includes housing and meals
- No refund on meal costs if you are a commuter
- A $75 refund on tuition

Summer Music Institute Frequently Asked Questions
Go to the Summer Music Institute website click on the register/fees tab, click on the SMI icon, click on Summer Programs link to the right of the screen, click on Summer Music Institute link to the right of the screen, click on the session you are interested in on the right hand side of the screen and then click on the camp you want to register for.
Can I print the registration form and mail it in?
No. All registration forms must be submitted and paid online with a credit card or electronic check.
How do I submit an electronic check?
When you get to the select payment method choose the electronic check option. The next screen will ask you for your bank account number, whether it is a savings or checking account and if it’s a checking account the routing number on your checks. There is a link to show you where to get this information on your checks. The amount of the camp will be deducted directly from your checking or savings account.
Does my son/daughter need to audition before they are accepted into the camp?
No. If you fill out the registration form and pay in full your son/daughter is accepted into the camp. After you submit the form make sure you get a confirmation that it went through okay. Some of the camps have auditions after the students arrive or they may require a CD be sent in ahead of time but neither of these are for admission purposes.
My son/daughter takes medication what should I do?
If your son/daughter is taking medication go to the SMI website click on the tab "Forms” scroll down to the forms section and click on medications.
If you need the camp staff to dispense the medication you fill out the form “Permission to Dispense Medication by Camp Program Staff”.

I received a scholarship can I deduct that from the registration amount?
No. You need to pay for the camp in full at the time of registration with a credit card or online check.
If you received a scholarship from the College of Musical Arts you will be reimbursed after camp starts.
If you received a scholarship outside the College of Musical Arts you need to register and pay for the camp in full and then send a check from the organization to the Summer Music Institute at the address above. Once the check is received you will get reimbursed for the amount of the check.
Can you tell me about parking on a college campus?
ALL parking passes are distributed at check-in.
Students who are residents on campus can receive a parking pass for the week that will allow them to park in the dorm parking lot.
Students who are commuters can receive a parking pass that will allow them to park in a lot near Moore Musical Arts Center. Parents who are coming to the final concert on Friday can get a parking pass that allows them to park in a lot near Moore Musical Arts Center.
All parking passes are distributed at check-in.
SMI is not responsible for reimbursing parking tickets.
What about junior high or middle school students?
Junior High/Middle school grades vary per district.
SMI considers junior high/middle school students as those entering at least 7th grade. However, camps have different grade or age requirements as follows:
STRING – At least one year of middle school or high school string playing experience
PIANO – Ages 13-18 . Conditional acceptance of students 12 years of age may be requested via the camp director.
VOCAL ARTS – entering grades 10-12
DOUBLE REED- entering grades 9-12
BRASS – entering grades 9-12
SUPER SAX – entering grades 9-12
RECORDING – ages 15-18
FLUTE- entering grades 9-12
MUSICAL THEATRE – entering grades 10-12
Should your student be home schooled or have different levels of experience, please contact the director. Exceptions can be made where appropriate.
When will I need to bring my student and when will I need to pick up my student?
Check-in for camps are Sunday afternoons between 1:00-3:00 p.m. and pick up between 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Friday.
