Irina Arbatskaya, music certificate program from the Ukraine (Maxim Mogilevsky) won third place in the Corpus Christi International Piano Competition in February in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Megan Ball, master’s candidate, (Myra Merrit) won second place in the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs competition in March.

- David Babich, senior from Amherst (Distinguished Artist Professor John Sampen), won first chair in the saxophone section, playing both alto and soprano saxophone, and the solo in Redline Tango by John Mackey.

Jenny Meggitt, senior from Bowling Green (Myra Merritt) awarded a Certificate of Encouragement at the Metropolitan Opera 2006 Regional Auditions in Detroit in November.
Yeji Kim, master’s candidate from South Korea (Nina Assimakopoulos) won the state level of the Young Artist Woodwind competition held by the Music Teachers National Association at Oberlin College in October.
Michael Hsin-en Liu, master’s candidate from Taiwan (Nina Assimakopoulos) won the college category at the 2006–07 Flute Fair Competition sponsored by the Rochester Flute Association Inc. in October.
David Wegehaupt, senior from Glendale, Ariz. (John Sampen) won a Fulbright award to study saxophone at the Conservatoire National de Musique de Région Boulogne-Billancourt in Paris in 2007–08. He was the only saxophonist from the U.S. to advance to the second round of the 4th International Adolphe Sax Competition in Dinant, Belgium in October.
Octavio Más-Arocas, doctoral candidate from Spain (Emily Freeman Brown) awarded the prestigious Thelma Robinson Award by the Conductors Guild.
Four students won awards at the National Association of Teachers of Singing Buckeye State Regional Student Auditions held at Bluffton University in November.
- Second place in the Mature Beginner Category: Mary Squire, sophomore from Sylvania (Myra Merritt)
- Honorable mention in the Advanced Women Category: Megan Bell, master’s candidate from Columbus (Myra Merritt)
- Third place in the College Freshman Women Category: Lizbeth Malanga, freshman from Bowling Green (Myra Merritt)
- Third place in the College Freshman Women Category: Marissa Zacharius, sophomore from Celina (Barbara Lockard-Zimmerman)
Mihai Popean, master’s candidate from Romania (Elainie Lillios) won first place in the Young Composers Competition sponsored by Craig’s Pianos & Keyboards and the University of Toledo in April.
Timothy Stulman, doctoral candidate from Findlay (Distinguished Artist Professor Marilyn Shrude) “Spring” from Si Ji Tu was performed by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony in May.
40th Annual Competitions in Music Performance Winners
- Undergraduate division winners were soprano Jenny Meggitt, senior from Bowling Green (Myra Merritt) and soprano saxophonist Christopher Bartz, junior from Kirkwood, Mo. (John Sampen)
- Graduate division winners were pianists Tatiana Shustova, master’s candidate from Russia (Maxim Mogilevsky) and I-Chen Yeh, doctoral candidate from Taiwan (Laura Melton)
- Composition division winner was Andrés Carrizo, master’s candidate from Panama (Marilyn Shrude) for Scramasax for saxophone quartet
- Audience Choice Awards were presented to pianists I-Chen Yeh and Anton Zotov, freshman from the Ukraine (Maxim Mogilevsky)
- Virginia Marks Collaborative Pianist Award was awarded to Rouxu Chen, junior from China (Distinguished Teaching Professor Virginia Marks), for the second year in a row.
