College of Musical Arts

2007–2008 Young People’s Concerts

The very successful inaugural season of the College of Musical Arts’ Young People’s Concerts took place during the 1997–1998 school year, and was the college’s first-ever series planned specifically for children.

The Saturday morning 45-minute programs, created to introduce young people to various styles of music, focused on entertaining and educating, and all included interactive experiences for children. The 2006–2007 season of Young People’s Concerts will present four concerts, and will again focus on different styles and genres of music and instruments.

All 2007–08 YPC concerts will be held in Bryan Recital Hall at the Moore Musical Arts Center.

2007–2008 Schedule

Saxophone

Saturday, October 27, 2007 – Saxophobia

When it comes to the many sizes and shapes of the saxophone, we all have a little “saxophobia.” See them all with Distinguished Artist Professor Dr. John Sampen and his BGSU saxophone band in a delightful, energetic and fun-filled program.

Cool Singer

Saturday, November 10, 2007 – Men In Black

This concert is in Kobacker Hall.

The exciting University Men’s Chorus will perform a variety of music, from classical to pop, jazz, barbershop and even Broadway. They sing higher and lower than you ever thought men could, have fun together and are way cool to listen to and watch—you never quite know what they will be up to! And…they always dress in black!

Holiday Singer

Saturday, December 1, 2007 – Holidays on Broadway

Martin and Blaine, Meredith Willson, the immortal Irving Berlin: all these and more wrote for the Broadway stage, and all have created some of the most exciting holiday songs in the American Songbook. Join the college’s young singing talent for some tuneful yuletide charm!

Taiko Drummer

Saturday, February 9, 2008 – Taiko!

For centuries, Japanese drums (taiko) have been used during harvest time, festivals and more. More recently, taiko performers have created an exciting new musical experience. Hear and see this new (and loud!) tradition with Dr. Paul Yoon and the BGSU Hayabusa Taiko Ensemble. You’ll get a chance to learn Japanese matsuri dancing, a drumming pattern and maybe even a chance to hit the drum!

Flute Player

Saturday, March 29, 2008 – Flute Magic

Come and experience the world of bumblebees, carnivals, whirlpools and rivers—all through the sounds of the flute. Listen to BGSU flute students and Professor Nina Assimakopoulos as they fill the hall with magical sounds that will dazzle and spark the imagination!

All performances will take place at 11 a.m. in the Moore Musical Arts Center. Admission is $1 for children, and $2 for adults, and is payable at the Box Office the morning of the concert. The Box Office will open at 10:30 a.m. for each concert.

The Young People’s Concerts are recommended for children ages 5 and up, but younger music fans are welcome to attend. For more information, please call the Moore Musical Arts Center Box Office at (419) 372-8171 or (800) 589-2224.
