Guido’s Band

Instrumental Early Music Ensemble

Guido’s Band is the instrumental early music ensemble at Bowling Green State University’s College of Musical Arts. The group performs dances and other instrumental music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and early Baroque periods.

Guido’s BandGuido’s Band has a long history at BGSU. Recently the ensemble has performed two contemporary works written specifically for the group, one by the distinguished composer Jeffery Mumford of Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the other by BGSU composition student Luke D. Rosen. In addition, instrumentalists and vocalists perform together in small ensembles depending on the demands of the music.

Guido’s Band is a course open to any student in the University (who is proficient on a modern instrument and who reads music) offered through the Department of Musicology/Composition/Theory (MUCT). It is intended to expose students to the repertoire, performance practices and historical context of early Western art music.

The group rehearses for two hours a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30–11:20 a.m.) in the Moore Musical Arts Center at BGSU. It performs at least twice a year on campus in Bryan Recital Hall and additionally for school and community concerts throughout the year. See the college calendar of events.
