Jennifer Goode Cooper has been hailed as a “powerful, expressive soprano” with “good dramatic instincts,” (NY Times) who “fills the theater with her soaring soprano voice.” (Variety) Most recently, she made her debut with New York City Opera, in Stephen Schwartz’s Séance on a Wet Afternoon, where she covered Lauren Flanigan in the role of Myra Foster. She also debuted the role of Titania/Hippolyta in Michael Ching’s Opera a capella, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, at Opera Memphis. She performed Musetta in Baz Luhrmann’s Broadway and Los Angeles productions of La Bohème, shortly after covering the 2nd Lady in The Magic Flute at Opera Theater of St. Louis..
Jennifer has won awards at the following competitions: Kurt Weill Foundation’s Lenya Competition (Grand Prize, judged by Teresa Stratas), MacAllister Awards, Met Council Mid-South Regionals, Eugene Opera’s Belle Voci Competition, the Orpheus Vocal Competition, Opera Birmingham’s Competition, Mobile Opera’s Palmer-Tensai Competition, the 5 Towns Foundation, and Shreveport Opera’s Singer of the Year. While earning her Master’s from Manhattan School of Music in the studio of Edith Bers, she sang the role of Female Chorus in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia with renowned Maestro Julius Rudel, and the role of Mary Follet in the NYC debut of William Mayer’s A Death in the Family (Cast recording on Albany Records). She has sung summers at the Glimmerglass Opera, Opera Theater of St. Louis, Bowdoin International and Greenwich Music Festivals. Jennifer is thrilled to have worked closely with Steven Osgood, Charles Riecker, Warren Jones, Ricky Ian Gordon, Baz Luhrmann, Ben Moore, the Orchestra of St. Lukes, Memphis Symphony, Omaha Symphony, Brian Zeger, Martin Katz, JJ Penna, Steven Blier, and Pierre Vallet.
In addition to her Broadway Bohème, she has performed extensively in music theater and crossover repertoire. Jennifer performed the role of Babe Williams (The Pajama Game) at the Goodspeed Opera House to the acclaim of its composer, Richard Adler. Other regional credits: George M. (Fay Templeton) at Goodspeed, My Fair Lady (Eliza cover), A Christmas Carol (Meg), and Joseph… (Narrator Standby) at North Shore Music Theater, Pirates of Penzance (Edith) at Kansas City Rep/Arizona Theater Co., Jesus Christ Superstar (Mary Magdalene) at Shreveport Opera, and the role of Anna as a Guest Artist in The King and I at Theatre Memphis. Jennifer received her B. M. in Music Theater from New York University, playing Julie Jordan (Carousel) and Fiona MacClaren (Brigadoon). In 2008, she covered the role of Kate in Kiss Me, Kate! at Glimmerglass Opera as a Young American Artist. She has sung numerous cabarets at the Firebird Café in NYC, concerts at Carnegie Hall, backup for Patti LuPone, and benefits with Neil Diamond, Jerry Herman, and Disney composer Alan Menken.
Concert repertoire includes Vaughan William’s Hodie, Mahler’s 4th Symphony, Barber’s Knoxville; Summer of 1915, Haydn’s Creation, Mendelssohn’s St. Paul, Faure’s Requiem and Handel’s Messiah. She has served on the voice faculty of Rhodes College in Memphis, and is a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Memphis.
