Holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in ethnomusicology, and a Master's degree in Music with an emphasis in ethnomusicology from Tufts University; research interests include music and advertising, American popular music, identity and music (especially focusing on race and gender); has presented papers at major national and international conferences including the Society of Ethnomusicology, International Association for the Study of Popular Music, American Studies Association, Experience Music Project Pop Conference, and Feminist Theory and Music; review article published in the Critical Studies in Improvisation journal; performs clarinet in a variety of contexts.
