a tempo Summer 2008Trio winds second place in Boston
A graduate trio from Bowling Green State University’s College of Musical Arts took second place recently at the International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition in Boston. The PVC Trio consists of soprano Sara Emerson from Traverse City, Mich.; clarinetist Spencer Prewitt from Braymer, Mo., and pianist Laure Vermuelin from France. Emerson earned her master’s degree in music performance from BGSU in May; Prewitt and Vermuelin are also majoring in music performance. The trio qualified for a live audition in the competition’s second round when its audition tape was selected during the first round. Awarded second place in the vocal category, the ensemble received a silver medal and a certificate of accomplishment, and performed in the Winners’ Concert at the First Church in Boston. Coached by BGSU music faculty members Kevin Schempf, associate professor of clarinet, and Myra Merritt, professor of voice, the PVC Trio also won the graduate division of the college’s Chamber Music Competition in February. The international competition was created to provide young and mature chamber music ensembles from around the world with an opportunity to compete with each other in their respective age groups and to perform in the best music halls of New England and New York. This year’s contest attracted more than 70 chamber ensembles including musicians from Italy, Argentina, Germany, Japan, Spain, Canada and Israel. |
