Ensemble News

A Cappella Choir, directed by Dr. Sandra Frey Stegman, toured New York and Massachusetts as part of spring tour, May 3–10, 2008. The group presented nine concerts during the weeklong tour.

Athletic Band, director Dr. Carol Hayward, traveled to the MAC Tournament in Cleveland, May 10-15, 2008.

The Bowling Green Philharmonia, directed by Dr. Emily Freeman Brown, was joined by the members of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s Third Symphony as the final event of the 90th anniversary season for the orchestra.

Horn Club, directed by Dr. Andrew Pelletier; Trombone Choir, directed by Dr. William Mathis, and the Trumpet Ensemble, directed by Charles Saenz, presented a Brass Ensembles concert at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral as part of the cathedral music concert series on February 24, 2008.

The Steel Drum Ensemble, directed by Bryan Stanbridge, performed at the “Gathering of the Pans” festival hosted by the National Trails High School in New Paris, Ohio, on April 19. The ensemble also premiered Caribbean Gates by BGSU graduate composer Alan Elkins on its spring concert, April 14.

Trumpet Ensemble, directed by Saenz, performed at the 2008 Ohio Trumpet Guild Conference at Cedarville University on April 5, 2008.

University Choral Society, directed by Dr. Mark Munson, prepared the group for three performances of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra on Feb. 1–3, 2008. Performances were in the Peristyle at the Toledo Museum of Art.

University Men’s Chorus, directed by Dr. William Skoog, performed at the OMEA conference in Cincinnati on February 7, 2008. The chorus also performed at DeVos Concert Hall in Grand Rapids, Mich., on February 21. As part of the group’s annual spring tour, the chorus performed at the Intercollegiate Men’s Chorus Conference in Vienna, Va., on March 29, 2008. Dr. Roger Schupp (percussion) was a featured soloist on Songs from Matengo Folktales for men’s chorus and marimba by Peter Hamlin.

The HeeBeeBGS, directed by graduate student Andrew Schultz, presented 15 concerts at high schools in Sheffield, Cleveland, Westlake, Louisville, Columbus, Grove City, Ashville, Marion, Toledo, Tontogany, Defiance and Perrysburg, Ohio, during spring break, March 4–8, 2008. The group is part of the University Men’s Chorus.

University Women’s Chorus, directed by Stegman, toured Michigan February 29–March 4, 2008.

Wind Symphony, directed Dr. Bruce Moss, premiered Dr. Burton Beerman’s fanfare and Distinguished Artist Professor Marilyn Shrude’s Matins at the band’s concert on the 50th Annual Band New Music Reading and Directors Clinic in January 2008. The band also premiered David’s Book: Concerto for Percussion by David Maslanka featuring Dr. Roger Schupp (percussion) on April 18, 2008.
