College of Musical Arts

a tempo summer2007

A Letter from the Dean

Dear Music Alumni and Friends,

Richard Kennell

As times change, your College of Musical Arts must change as well.

This issue of a tempo represents our latest effort to bring you more news about the college: faster, up-to-date and in a format that encourages your attention and response. You will continue to receive an expanded paper version of our alumni newsletter each January, but this electronic edition will enable us to contact you at other times of the year as needed, rather than waiting for publication deadlines.

Another example of how our activities mirror changes in society is that today, the world is our classroom. This summer, College of Musical Arts faculty and students have traveled the world to participate in classes, conference and performances. Faculty members Bruce Moss and William Skoog led over 200 Ohio high school students on a concert tour of Europe, and Mark Munson took an alumni chamber choir to Sweden. From Florence, Italy, to the Sichuan Conservatory in China, and from Corfu, Greece, to Vienna, Austria, our faculty and students have shared their talents and developed new ones for their return to the Moore Musical Arts Center this fall.

Our musical future also involves successful collaborations. Some of you may recall the highly successful North American premiere of a 1658 Francesco Cavalli opera at BGSU in fall 2005. This year, the college will again collaborate with the Collegium Musicum of the Eastman School of Music for a 1660 Cavalli opera. On November 1 and 3, the Bowling Green Opera Theater will perform Vincent Corrigan’s modern edition of La virtù de’ strali d’Amore directed by Ronald Shields, chair of the theatre and film department. Those of you in the Rochester, New York region can enjoy our BGSU production on November 9 when we perform in Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music!

Finally, in the years ahead, BGSU will add a new theater complex between the Fine Arts and the Moore Musical Arts centers. Named the Wolfe Center for the Arts, this facility will offer state-of-the-art capabilities for the presentation of opera and musical theatre. Watch for more news of this exciting new project in the next editions of a tempo.

Thank you for sharing your professional accomplishments with us. I appreciate your support of the next generation of Bowling Green alumni!
