New Chamber Music Competition

The college held the inaugural Chamber Music Competition on Saturday, April 7, and Monday, April 9, in Bryan Recital Hall.
Sixteen graduate and undergraduate student chamber music ensembles competed in the preliminary round.
Cash prizes include $200 for each member of the first-place winning ensemble and $100 for each member of the second-place ensemble in each division.
First place in the undergraduate division went to “BGSU Percussion: Pangea” (Danny Klohn, Chris Lennard and Chris Spivey) and second place to “Floot Loops” (Andrea Avers, Kristen Hoverman, Chelsea Koziatek, Kelsi Millam).
First place in the graduate division went to “à tre” (I-Chen Yeh, piano, Alina Istic, violin, and Michael Hsin-en Liu, flute) and second place to the “Rubix Saxophone Quartet” (David Babich, Chris Chmielewski, Michael Van Pelt and Susan Poirier).

The winning ensembles were featured before the Tuesday Musical Association’s Gidon Kremer “Kremerata” concert on Tuesday, April 17, in the lobby of E.J. Thomas Hall at the University of Akron.
Judges for the preliminary round include violinist and member of the Chester String Quartet Aaron Berofsky from the University of Michigan, pianist Robert Conway from Wayne State University and BGSU alumna and flutist Kathryn Umble ’85 from Youngstown State University. Final round judges include former Bowling Green native Kevin Cobb, trumpet professor at The Juilliard School and member of the American Brass Quintet; pianist Greg Kostraba, classical music director at WGTE-FM 91 in Toledo, and clarinetist Ron Samels from Duquesne University and a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony.
Audience members had the opportunity to select one ensemble in each division as an Audience Choice Award. Each group chosen received a cash prize of $500. Undergraduate winners were “Pangea” and graduate winners were “Rokoko” (Yeji Kim, flute, Ovidiu Corneau, oboe, Jiung Yoon, piano).
The concert was co-sponsored by longtime Bowling Green residents Richard and Carolyn Lineback and Pro Musica, friends of music at the college.
