The College
The College of Musical Arts enjoys the distinction of collegiate status within Bowling Green State University. This position, as an academic unit, allows the College to contribute to the cultural life of the University and community while educating talented musicians for professional careers in performance, teaching, composition and musical scholarship. The College has achieved national recognition for its outstanding faculty and student performers, and for its academic programs in preparing students to be music scholars, educators and performers.

- Students are automatically considered for a Music Talent Award at the time they audition. These awards are renewable for four years.

Special Programs
- Choral and Instrumental Ensembles: Five bands (Falcon Marching Band, Wind Symphony, Concert Band, University Band and Athletic Band); two Jazz Lab Bands; an orchestra (the Bowling Green Philharmonia); five choral groups (Collegiate Chorale, A Cappella Choir, University Men’s Chorus, University Women’s Chorus and University Choral Society); more than 20 instrumental and vocal chamber music ensembles; about 700 student participants in all groups.
- Cooperative School Field Program: The music education undergraduate program, among the largest in the nation, provides a highly sophisticated cooperative field component beginning in the sophomore year and concluding with student teaching.
- Kusuma Sari Gamelan: The only genuine Balinese gamelan in the Midwest, the “Kusuma Sari” specializes in the music of Bali. The ensemble performs concerts both on and off campus.
- MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music: The college and its faculty have established a national leadership role in the development and presentation of new music. Bowling Green annually sponsors the New Music Festival, nationally known as a forum for the introduction of works by American composers and featured on National Public Radio broadcasts around the nation.
- Music of World Cultures: A course on the music of world cultures is offered for all University students; courses are offered for music majors in African, Japanese and Indonesian music.
- Music Plus: This innovative outreach project provides musical and academic enhancement for Toledo inner-city public school students. Music education majors in the college participate as mentors.
- Music Technology and Recording Studios: These state-of-the-art facilities incorporate sound generation computer applications to music and video presentations and enable the college to offer one of the few recording technology minors in the state.
- Opera Theater: An outstanding training group for vocal and orchestral undergraduate and graduate students, the Opera Theater annually produces at least two full operas and several programs of opera scenes. Alumni have earned successful professional apprenticeships and careers in some of the major opera centers of the United States and Europe.
- Batchelder Music Community: The oldest special interest housing at BGSU is home to more than 140 undergraduate music majors and minors. Directly across the street from the Moore Musical Arts Center, it is a popular housing option.
- Arts Village: Students with an interest in music, art, theatre, dance and creative writing have a new opportunity to live and learn together in the Arts Village learning community.
Concert Series
A major cultural resource in northwest Ohio, the College of Musical Arts annually sponsors over 400 musical events, all open to the public. Series events include:
- Festival Series: Performances by world-renowned visiting musicians and dancers.
- Music at the Forefront Series: Music on the “cutting edge” of the contemporary scene.
- New Music Festival: Features performances of new music and multimedia compositions, visual arts presentations, lectures, seminars and related sessions.
- Ensemble Series: Faculty and student performances by large and small instrumental and vocal ensembles.
- Faculty Artist/Scholar Series: Performances and lectures by BGSU’s resident faculty.
- Student Recital Series: Performances by BGSU student musicians and composers, as well as small ensembles.
