Dr. Marilyn Shrude, professor of music at Bowling Green State University, served as composer-in-residence at the Montessori School of Bowling Green from January to June 1997. The residency was made possible by a grant from Meet the Composer, New Music for Schools. Shrude performed her music for the students, observed and taught both the general music class and the string orchestra and worked with student composers. The students ranged from age seven to twelve. Shrude wrote five works for the ensembles and three of these works were performed at two final concerts on May 28, 1997. The children also studied two of her concert pieces, Drifting Over a Red Place and Shadows and Dawning, under the direction of Allison Poorman and Dr. Joyce Eastlund Gromko.
