Robert Morris Duo Diorama JACK Quartet

The 31st Annual New Music Festival takes place October 21 –23, 2010. This year’s festival will feature Robert Morris as special guest composer and will include performances by the acclaimed JACK Quartet, Duo Diorama, BGSU ensembles, faculty, students and guests. Organized by the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music and the College of Musical Arts, the festival has hosted John Adams, Samuel Adler, Milton Babbitt, William Bolcom, Anthony Braxton, John Cage, Chen Yi, John Corigliano, George Crumb, Mario Davidovsky, Anthony Davis, Philip Glass, John Harbison, Lou Harrison, Karel Husa, Joan La Barbara, Paul Lansky, Pauline Oliveros, Shulamit Ran, Bernard Rands, Terry Riley, Christopher Rouse, Frederic Rzewski, Gunther Schuller, Joseph Schwantner, Bright Sheng, Steven Stucky, Morton Subotnick, Joan Tower, Vladimir Ussachevsky and more than 400 other guest composers and musicians since 1980.

Thursday, October 21

Composer Talk - Robert Morris: 3:30 p.m., Bryan Recital Hall (free)

Special guest composer Robert Morris discusses his works and compositional style.

Concert 1: 8 p.m., Kobacker Hall (free)

A concert featuring chamber works performed by Duo Diorama (Winston Choi, piano, and MingHuan Xu, violin) and the BGSU New Music Ensemble, featuring dancers from Kayle + Company & The Architects.

Late-Night Performance, 10 p.m., Cla-Zel Theatre (free)

A special "after hours" performance at the historic Cla-Zel Theatre in downtown Bowling Green, featuring DMA student and faculty performers from the College of Musical Arts, electric guitarist Derek Johnson and special guests. Includes works by Jennifer Hidgon, Louis Andriessen and others. Program to be announced from the stage.

Friday, October 22

Concert 2: 10:30 a.m., Bryan Recital Hall (free; receive ticket at door)

A concert featuring chamber works performed by students and faculty of the College of Musical Arts, featuring guest violinist Yehonatan Berick.

Concert 3: 2:30 p.m., Kobacker Hall (free)

A concert of electroacoustic and chamber works, featuring Daniel Koppelman, MIDI controller.

The Music of Robert Morris: 4:00 p.m., Bryan Recital Hall (free)

Presentations on the music of Robert Morris, given by Dora Hanninen and Andrew Mead.

Concert 4: JACK Quartet, 8 p.m., Kobacker Hall (free)

The Acclaimed JACK String Quartet is breaking new ground with "viscerally exciting performances" (The New York Times) of "explosive virtuosity" (Boston Globe). Alex Ross (New Yorker) proclaimed their performance of Iannis Xenakis' complete string quartets as being "exceptional" and "beautifully harsh," and Mark Swed (Los Angeles Times) called their sold-out performances of Georg Friedrich Haas' String Quartet No. 3 In iij. Noct. "mind-blowingly good." JACK's recording of Xenakis' complete string quartets appeared on "Best Of" lists from the Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, New Yorker, NPR, and Time Out New York as "one of 2009's most impressive recordings."

Saturday, October 23

Concert 5: 10:30 a.m., Bryan Recital Hall (free)

A concert of chamber and electroacoustic works performed by students and faculty of the College of Musical Arts, with guest mezzo-soprano Renee Clair.

Concert 6: Duo Diorama, 2:30 p.m., Bryan Recital Hall (free)

Duo Diorama - Chinese violinist MingHuan Xu and Canadian pianist Winston Choi - are compelling and versatile artists who perform in an eclectic mix of musical styles, ranging from the great standard works to the avant-garde. It is a partnership with a startlingly fresh and powerful approach to music for violin and piano. Comprised of two renowned soloists who can effectively blend their distinctive personalities together to create a unified whole, the duo maintains an active performing and touring schedule.

Concert 7: 8 p.m., Kobacker Hall (admission charged; $10, $7 for students in advance, $13/$10 day of show)

Works for orchestra and wind ensemble, performed by the Bowling Green Philharmonia and Wind Symphony, featuring saxophone soloist John Sampen.
