The annual New Music & Art Festival has traditionally brought international musicians and artists to Bowling Green for a celebration of current art and music. The work of over two dozen composers, scholars and filmmakers will be presented at the 22nd Annual New Music & Art Festival on Oct. 18-20, 2001. The festival includes concerts, film screenings, lectures, exhibitions, workshops and paper presentations and other exciting opportunities. Organized by the directors of the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music and the Bowling Green State University Fine Arts Center Galleries, Burton Beerman and Jacqueline Nathan, and professor of English Ellen Berry, the Festival supports the creation of new work and engages both the University and city communities in the process of art appreciation and awareness. The majority of events are accessible, free, and open to the public.

This year’s featured composer is William Bolcom, recipient of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his 12 New Etudes for piano. His works are performed worldwide, and he has been featured on nearly 40 albums as both performer and composer, several of which have been nominated for Grammy Awards. Recent compositions include the opera A View from the Bridge, with a libretto by Arthur Miller and Arnold Weinstein, premiered by the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the musical score for John Turturro's film Illuminata. Bolcom studied in Paris with Darius Milhaud and graduated at Stanford University. Since 1973 he has taught composition at the University of Michigan.

Gregory Barsamian is this year’s featured guest artist. Barsamian’s kinetic sculptures enact transformations that recall the intensity and mystery of dream images. He has an impressive international record of solo and group exhibitions at university and commercial galleries. His 1998 solo exhibition, “Innuendo Non Troppo,” originated at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati and traveled to five museums across the U.S. and to the NTT InterCommunication Center in Tokyo.

The festival also includes a special focus on film. Julia Lesage, who is the founding editor of Jump Cut, is the featured guest documentary filmmaker.
