Lecture: "On the Road: Art Cars" by David Best. In the last 15 years, the
phenomenon of art cars has become a nationwide popular movement. Whether
defined as urban folk art or post-pop art assemblage, it has resulted in a
remarkable production of richly diverse personal and cultural expression
manifested through radically embellished and augmented automobiles. This
lively and individual dialogue with the icon of personal transportation is
one that will engage both the casual observer and the devoted contemporary
art enthusiast. Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery, Fine Arts Center.
Exhibition opening: "Four Wheels, One Eye: Art Cars in the Eyes of the
Image Makers." The exhibition is a selection of 70 photographs by Harrod Blank, Amelia Blythe, Dick Craig,
George Hixson, Clare La Groue, Andy Mann, Maurice Roberts, Phillip Talpin,
Irv Tepper and Dave Wilson. This exhibition was organized by the Ineri and
Orange Show Foundations of Houston. These photographs not only document some
of the remarkable vehicles that have been produced but also record their
creators, viewers and the "art car culture," a rich mixture of car buffs,
artists and spectators entranced by this apotheosis of material culture. In
conjunction with the photographs and two videos by Harrod Blank, an actual
art car created during the workshop and two to three art cars brought to
Bowling Green by their creators will be exhibited. On display through
November 5. Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery, Fine Arts Center and Forum,
