29th Annual New Music Festival International Calls for Works

Call for Papers *UPDATED 04/08*

The MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music invites proposals for a special session on "The Music of John Harbison." The paper session will take place during the New Music Festival to be held October 23-25, 2008. Special guests at the festival include composer John Harbison and the ensembles Flexible Music and Ensemble Sirius. We are interested in papers that address general topics related to Harbison's music as well as presentations on individual compositions (in particular, but not limited to, the Gatsby Etudes for piano; Twilight Music for horn, violin, and piano; and the Mirabai Songs for voice and piano). The papers will be scheduled in thirty-minute time slots (twenty for the paper and ten for discussion) on the afternoon of Friday, October 24. Two to three papers will be chosen for the session and each participant will receive a small travel honorarium.

The festival will consist of approximately six concerts of contemporary music and will feature works by composers including Luciano Berio (American Premiere of Récit (Chemins VII) for alto saxophone and orchestra), John Harbison (several works), Karlheinz Stockhausen (a performance of Kontakte), and others. Also featured will be 15 to 20 emerging and established composers who will be present at the festival for performances of their music.

Application Procedures

Please email abstracts of 500 words or less in PDF or MS Word format to Mikel Kuehn, director MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music (mkuehn@bgsu.edu).
