Outreach from the Center

Embracing combined goals of education and research, the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music at Bowling Green State University’s College of Musical Arts sponsors outreach services and opportunities designed to assist and enrich the University community, northwest Ohio and visiting musicians and scholars from all parts of the world. In addition to the nationally acclaimed concert offerings of the annual New Music Festival, and the Music at the Forefront concert series, the Center sponsors educational outreach, grant opportunities and residencies. Unusual projects and collaborations are also encouraged.

***NEW FOR 2012***
MACCM proudly announces the inaugural BGSU Young Composer Competition. See the competition information page for more details!

MACCM Institute

MACCM, in partnership with the Toledo School for the Arts, initiated a year-long, intensive after-school opportunity for a select group of TSA students. All ages are welcome to apply. Five BGSU doctoral music students will form a teaching consort and will meet with the students weekly on Tuesday afternoons after school. Meetings will rigorously explore a wide variety of creativity techniques, focusing on music composition. The highest priorities of this project are the development of personal expression, critical thinking and becoming well-versed in many styles of new music and art.

Meetings between the BGSU teaching consort and TSA students take place every Monday from 3:30-4:30 p.m. October 26, 2010 through October 14, 2011. Over the summer break, students continue to work and share ideas online through blogs, online chats and videos.

Each student writes an original musical composition as his/her final project. All of these new works will be rehearsed, publicly performed and recorded by Mantra Percussion, a professional New York-based percussion ensemble at the 2011 Bowling Green New Music Festival in October..

Students have the opportunity to attend select world-class performances at BGSU and other venues (concerts, master classes and lectures) transported and supervised by TSA and BGSU personnel.

This ambitious project is primarily funded by the MidAmerican Center for
Contemporary Music with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

BG Creates

The MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music has been active in northwest Ohio schools, helping to create cooperative projects in performance, composition and new technology. Two past projects, Composers in the Schools and Meet the Composer—New Music for Schools, provided residencies for BGSU student and faculty composers in area schools. MACCM also sponsors presentations for any organizations seeking to broaden their experience in the contemporary arts. Summer workshops in new technology are offered for students and teachers through the University’s Continuing Education program.

Grant Opportunities

Limited grant funding is available to faculty, staff and students in BGSU’s College of Musical Arts. Administered by a college committee, the awards are given for research and development activities related to music composed since 1945.

Residencies

Guest musicians and scholars are considered for research and teaching residencies under the sponsorship of the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music. Recipients may use the state-of-the-art Music Technology Studios with assistance from the MACCM electronic technician/recording engineer. Select faculty and staff are also available for consultation (e.g., performance, composition, history, education and technology). Monetary grants are not awarded, but substantial in-kind services and space allocations will be considered. Past residencies have included F. Gerard Errante, Greg Fish, Deborah Kavasch, David Means, Mohammad Saada and James Umble.
