Introduction | Biographical Sketch | Transfers | Scope and Content | Series Description | Inventory
Introduction
Norman Daniels is an author who has worked in several genres of popular fiction. Literary manuscripts, television and radio scripts, and printed stories form the core of the collection.
Norman Daniels and his wife Dorothy had transferred the bulk of their manuscripts and collections to the Browne Popular Culture Library, Bowling Green State University, by 1985. The collection is open to research, however, the duplication of materials must comply with applicable copyright laws. This register was compiled Mark R. McDermott, Graduate Assistant in Popular Culture Studies, in May 1986 and updated in July 2009 by Patricia Falk.
Biographical Sketch
Norman Daniels was born in Connecticut. He attended Columbia and Northwestern Universities, and worked at a number of jobs before turning to writing full-time in the 1930's. He married the former Dorothy Smith in 1931.
Daniels' best-known creation during the era of the pulp thriller magazines was Tony Quinn, "the Black Bat," whose adventures he chronicled in Black Book Detective from 1939 TO 1952. He also contributed to the Doc Savage, Phantom Detective, and Don Winslow of the Navy series, among others, and wrote stories in the sports, science fiction, western, and other genres.
In the broadcast field, Daniels wrote a number of scripts and stories for radio, and worked as scriptwriter for the Nick Carter radio series. In the 1950's Daniels sold dramas and Westerns to television, and saw two of his short stories adapted for Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
Through the 1960's and 70's Daniels wrote for mystery magazines and mass-market paperbacks. His books include spy thrillers, adaptations of television shows, doctor and nurse novels, Gothics and romances, some of which were published under the name of his wife Dorothy.
Norman has largely retired from writing following completion of a five novel series set at the "Wyndward" plantation in the years surrounding the Civil War. He and his wife Dorothy lived in Camarillo, California until Norman's death in 1995.

Scope and Content
The Norman Daniels Collection contains the literary manuscripts for several of Daniels' works, including novels, short stories (mostly mysteries and thrillers), and television and radio scripts. Also included is a collection of clippings from movie magazines from the 1910s through the 1920s, showing many stars and scenes from movies of that period.
Researchers interested in the process of writing scripts, paperbacks, and magazine fiction, or who seek visual references of the late silent film era will find this collection of research value.
