Introduction

The Shirley T. Hailstock Collection is comprised of 3 cubic feet of documents that date from 1995-2000. The collection consists primarily of edited manuscripts, galleys, editor correspondence and one mounted promotional poster for the novel Clara's Promise.

Shirley T. Hailstock transferred her collection to the Browne Popular Culture Library at Bowling Green State University in May 2001. The collection has no restrictions placed on its use for scholarly purposes. Researchers are responsible for securing copyright permission when using all unpublished manuscripts and published works, whether authored by Shirley T. Hailstock or by other writers whose works may be found in this collection.

Biographical Sketch

Shirley T. Hailstock holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Howard University in Washington D.C. and an MBA in chemical marketing from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, N.J. Shirley's initial wish was to join the space program.

Shirley writes contemporary and historical romance and mainstream women's fiction. Her debut novel, Whispers of Love, was published in September 1994. It received wide critical acclaim and won the HOLT Medallion from the Virginia Romance Writers. It is currently in its 4th printing and was recently optioned for a television movie of the week. Shirley's first historical novel, Clara's Promise (1995), won the Utah Romance Writers Heart of the West Award. White Diamonds (1996) was nominated for a Romantic Times Award as the best Multicultural Romance of 1996. Romantic Times presented Shirley with a Career Achievement Award and her novel, Legacy, received the Waldenbooks Award for Bestselling Multicultural Romance. Legacy was also listed as one of the 100 Greatest Romance Novels of the 20th century.

Shirley has been a member of Romance Writers Association since 1988 and has been actively involved in the organization. She was also previously president of the New Jersey RWA and an officer of Women Writers of Color.

She lives in central New Jersey and has been an adjunct professor of accounting at Rutgers University, New Brunswick campus and taught novel writing at Middlesex County College. She enjoys traveling to many of her settings. She also enjoys sewing, tennis and reading.

Series Description

Literary Manuscripts: Novel Manuscripts; 1995-2000; Arranged chronologically; Shirley T. Hailstock's manuscripts include edited manuscripts, proofs and galleys. Manuscripts, proofs and galleys are broken down into parts of 3-4 chapters each for the researcher. Several of the titles include bound, autographed, pre-publication copies.

Correspondence: Correspondence; 1995 and 2000; Arranged chronologically; Correspondence consists of one editorial letter about Clara's Promise (1995) and one editor's letter about More Than Gold (2000).
