Biographical Sketch

Romance writer Dixie Browning (1930 - ) is a prolific author who has published more than 80 novels in both the romance and historical genres. She has also written many historical novels written with her sister under the pen name of Bronwyn Williams.

Browning began her writing career in 1976 with a weekly newspaper column and from there moved on to romance writing. She says that she has had no formal training to be an author, only a love of good stories.

She has given a number of workshops for the Romance Writers Association and has won a number of awards for her writing including a RITA, three Maggies for best historical of the year, seven top awards from the North Carolina Press Club and five first place awards from the National Federation of Press Women.

In addition to being a published author, Browning is an accomplished painter and is listed in Who's Who in American Art. She also helped organize the North Carolina Watercolor Society and served as its first president. She currently lives on Cape Hatteras Island on North Carolina's Outer Banks, where her family ties go back to the early 1700s.

Scope and Content

The Dixie Browning Collection consists of 2 cu. ft. of edited manuscripts and galleys, dating from 1999-2003. Also included in the collection is a small sampling of editor's production and style sheets and promotional material. Correspondence is very limited, consisting of only a few letters from editors, which have been kept with the appropriate manuscript.

The researcher will be able to trace the progression from outline to manuscript to edited manuscript to galley proof to finished product and promotional material.
