Introduction | Biographical Sketch | Scope and Content | Series Description | Inventory

Introduction

Anthony Slide is an internationally known film historian, scholar and writer of numerous works devoted to such topics as silent film, motion picture preservation, the entertainment industry and specific literary subjects. The Anthony Slide Collection begins in approximately 1964 and runs to the present with a heavier concentration of documentation starting in the 1980's. Dr. Slide continues to add to his collection since its donation to the Browne Popular Culture Library (BPCL) at Bowling Green State University in April 1989. Currently twenty-five cubic feet of files focus upon Slide's own publications, projects, consultation work, activities at the Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences, editing others' manuscripts and assisting writers of various entertainment and motion picture topics to get published.

Correspondence, manuscripts, and research files predominate in the collection, reflecting the full spectrum of Anthony Slide's activities as writer, historian, documentary maker, consultant to various groups and organizations, and mentor to other writers.

Dr. Slide does retain copyright to unpublished works contained within his papers. The collection was inventoried by BPCL staff. It was processed and the finding aid prepared at Bowling Green State University by Eric Honneffer, Center for Archival Collections (April 5, 2004). The collection was reorganized in July 2008.

Biographical Sketch

Anthony Slide was born in Birmingham, England on November 7, 1944 and was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Ashton, Birmingham. In his 2002 book Silent Players, Anthony Slide remarked "My first involvement in film in the mid-1960's was as honorary secretary of the Society for Film History Research, a group of dedicated scholars and non-scholars concerned with the more esoteric aspects of motion picture history."

In 1968 he co-founded The Silent Picture, the only quarterly seriously committed to the study of the art and history of the silent film. He served as its editor and publisher until it ceased operation in 1974. Anthony Slide organized Britain's first silent film festival at the London National Film Theater in 1970 as part of the London Film Festival. From 1968 until 1971 he was assistant editor of International Film Guide. In 1970 he published his first book, Early American Cinema.

Anthony Slide came to the United States in 1971 as a Louis B. Mayer Research Associate with the American Film Institute's Center for Advanced Film Studies in Beverly Hills, California. He would then move to the Institute's Washington D.C. headquarters and set up the American Film Institute Catalog: Feature Films, 1911-1920 and by 1973 become their associate film archivist in charge of the acquisition and preservation of over 2,000 films in the Library of Congress National Film collection.

Beginning in 1975 until 1980, Anthony Slide served as resident film historian at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in Los Angeles. He coordinated its educational and cultural activities; headed the National Film Information Service and handled the in-house exhibits, film programs and tributes. He continued to work part-time through 1986 at the Academy's Margaret Herrick Library, cataloging its special collections holdings.

Between 1986 and 1990 he was co-owner of Producers Library Service, one of the two oldest and largest independent stock footage libraries in the United States with more than six million feet of film. Since 1990, Anthony Slide has been an independent film scholar, archivist and consultant. His numerous writing, editing and consultant credits are listed in the enclosed vitae. He has authored over 70 books and edited over 150 others.

Scope and Content

The Anthony Slide collection spans the dates 1964 to the present with heavier concentration from the 1980's. The records focus primarily upon Slide's own books, articles, and reviews, his research projects, and actvities as resident film historian of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Also reflected in the papers is his consultation work and assistance to writers, especially as editor of the Filmmakers Series at Scarecrow Press. His reviews, many uncollected in book form, also appear here.

The research files alone comprise the largest portion of the collection with over fifteen cubic feet of records. These provide useful insights into how Slide collects and utilizes data for his publications and projects. The information amassed documents the entertainment industry from vaudeville through silent films to the present.  Assorted  CDs, disks, and other computer media are found throughout the collection.

The correspondence with publishers documents the particulars of Slide having his own works published as well as his role as editor helping other writers publish, perhaps for the first time, pertinent topics within the realm of motion picture and entertainment history. In the general correspondence, and at various locations throughout the collection is a wealth of information about Slide's own research interests and his association with former movie stars, studio employees, screenwriters, producers, directors and other individuals familiar with the Hollywood entertainment business especially during the silent film era.

Manuscripts and research files can include documents from AMPAS.  As resident film historian and consultant, Anthony Slide planned exhibits, film programs, recognition ceremonies and tributes and catalogued special collection holdings for the Academy.
