What materials are in the Music Library?
The Music Library houses materials related to the study of all types of music. Because we support an international archives
devoted to the study of popular music and because we collect materials in a variety of formats, many of our circulation policies
differ from those of the main library collections.
Where do I find Music Library materials?
Music Library locations are listed in the status box on the BGSU Libraries Catalog screen.
- Music Library Open Stacks - material is in the open stacks area, which is located in the public area (just to the right of the reference area--on compact
shelving); miniature and oversize scores are shelved separately
- Music Reference - material is in the reference area, which is located immediately to the right of the public service window
- Music Reference Index - material is in the reference area; the indexes are shelved out of call number order, at the end of the reference shelving
- Music Listening Center - material is shelved in the closed-stacks area and must be paged by one of the library staff; in addition to all sound and
video recordings, many popular-music-related books and journals are shelved in the closed stacks area
- Music Reserve - material has been placed on reserve for a music course and is held at the Listening Centerwindow
May I borrow Music Library materials?
Any books and scores with the status AVAILABLE (check the status box in the BGSU Libraries Catalog display) may be checked
out at the first floor circulation desk. As is necessary for all circulating library materials, you must be entered in the
Library Patron Database, and must present your BGSU ID with current validation sticker (or a valid courtesy card) each time
you borrow materials.
Scores and recordings with the status LIMITED CIRC may be borrowed only by particular patron groups or for short periods of
time (see the next question).
Any materials with the status LIBRARY USE ONLY may not be borrowed from the library and must be used on the Music Library
premises only.
Which scores are LIMITED CIRC?
Scores in the M2 and M3 classification are LIMITED CIRC. BGSU graduate students and BGSU faculty may borrow these scores for
two weeks at the first floor circulation desk.
May I borrow sound or video recordings?
Some sound and video recordings may be borrowed, depending on their content and your patron type. As a general rule, you will
be able to determine whether an item may be borrowed by reading the call number in the BGSU Libraries Catalog status box.
Course reserve CDs and cassette tapes and CMA Recital recordings do not circulate. You may listen to any recording in the
Music Library. If the call number begins:
MUSICCD (compact discs)
- BGSU undergrads - 3-day loan, no renewals
- BGSU grad students - 3-day loan, 3 renewals
- BGSU faculty & staff - 2-week loan, 3 renewals
MUSIC12/33 (12-inch, long-play records; vinyl)
- BGSU undergrads - in-library listening only
- BGSU grad students - 3-day loan, 3 renewals
- BGSU faculty & staff - 2-week loan, 3 renewals
MUSICVHS (videotapes)
- BGSU undergrads - 3-day loan, no renewals
- BGSU grad students - 3-day loan, 3 renewals
- BGSU faculty & staff - 3-day loan, 3 renewals
If the call number begins with numbers (12/33, 10/45, 10/33, etc.) or letters not preceded by the word MUSIC (CD or VHS, rather
than MusicCD or MusicVHS), the recording is part of the holdings of the Sound Recordings Archives. SRA recordings do not circulate.
Why can't I borrow any popular recordings?
Most of our popular recordings are part of an internationally known research archive, which is committed to preserving the
recordings. While we do not allow anyone to check out the recordings, on site listening is available.
Where do I borrow Music Library materials?
Any circulating materials held in the open stacks (public) area may be borrowed at the first floor circulation desk. Sound
and video recordings, as well as music course reserves may be borrowed at the Listening Center. Listening Center staff also
retrieve closed-stacks books and journals.
What about returns and renewals?
Any material borrowed from the first floor circulation desk may be returned and renewed there. Any material borrowed from
the Listening Center must be returned to the Listening Center, and must be renewed by Music Library staff members. Please DO NOT return any sound or
videorecordings to the first floor circulation desk or to any outside book drops. You are responsible for the material and
for any damage it may sustain until it is returned to the Listening Center.
May I renew materials over the phone?
Yes. For materials borrowed at the first-floor desk, use the Jerome Library renewal number. For materials borrowed at the
Listening Center Window, call 419-372-2307. In addition, you may renew your materials online. Go to the BGSU Libraries Catalog and choose My Library.
Will you make tapes of recordings for me?
Because of copyright and staffing concerns, we offer a very limited taping service, primarily reserved for those who need
limited selections to use in classroom presentations. We will not tape entire recordings, nor will we tape recordings for
individual study or for personal use. For further information on our taping policy, talk to a Music Library staff member.
How do I locate scores and recordings using the BGSU Libraries Catalog?
Music Library staff members have developed a number of guides to assist our patrons in locating scores and recordings. These
guides are located near the library terminals on the 3rd floor. The guides also are available online. If you aren't able to find what you need, please ask a Music Library staff member for assistance.
May I borrow music materials via OhioLINK?
Many books and scores circulate via the OhioLINK loan process. So far, however, only a few OhioLINK libraries loan compact
discs and videotapes. If you have any problems requesting materials via the OhioLINK patron request system, please ask a library
staff member for assistance.
