GETTING STARTED IN YOUR RESEARCH

Introduction

This module consists of 5 points to know in starting your research. It contains strategies to begin your research, including worksheets to use in brainstorming search strategies and keeping a research journal. It should take approximately 8 minutes to complete.

1. Know that mistakes, problems, false starts, re-starts, and moments when things don't go as planned will occur. Experiencing frustration and encountering stumbling blocks are all a part of research.

Scholarly, serious research takes time and practice. Some people make their livings conducting professional research. If you are seeking quick information for personal interest, such as how to bake a cake or who won the 1956 World Series, a simple Google search can be fine.

However, when you are assigned to write a research paper for a college course, professional publication, or professional conference, using a popular search engine such as Google or Yahoo is not appropriate.
