EDUCATION STATISTICAL & DEMOGRAPHIC RESOURCES
The Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)
There is a wealth of material here that provides social science data, some of which pertains to education. To get a start into making the most effective use of this web site, do the following:
- Go to the The Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) web site
- Begin by click the "Data Base Tutorial" link (left-hand side of screen or top tab)
- For a quick view of information readily available, return to the home page and click "Special Topic Archives". Use the drop-down menu to select "Child Care and Education". Explore, for example, the Internation Archive of Education Data.
- To experiment with searching the site, return to the home page, and click "Data Access & Analysis"
- Click search tips. Minimize this screen for future reference.
- Click advanced search
- Try using 2 search terms, such as "higher education" and "gender". [Note: you can search in particular fields, such as Subject, Summary, Title, and so on]
- From the results page, take note of the description and related literature links FIRST, before downloading the data
- To download data, you will be directed to create an account. As a student, faculty, or staff member at BGSU, you have to this data for free, provided you are affiliated with BGSU and the university maintains membership and good standing with ICPSR
Statistical Abstract of the United States
- Many statistics do not pertain to individual states. Go to Statistical Abstract of the United States, which is distributed by the U.S. Census Bureau.
- Select a particular date range (e.g. "2001-2005"
- Look for "Education"

National Center for Education Statistics: Digest of Education Statistics
- Go to the U.S. Department of Education web site
- Select "Research & Statistics" (right-hand side of screen)
- Select "Statistics" (left-hand side of screen)
- Choose any of the drop-down menus, such as "General Statistics".

Ohio Department of Education
- Go to the Ohio Department of Education web site.
- Select a topic or category under "Data", such as "EMIS" (Education Management Information System)
- Make use of the "Site Info" links that accompany each category to learn more about the kind of information it contains.

Education Statistics Quarterly
Education Statistics Quarterly is operated by the National Center for Education Statistics. The Quarterly offers a comprehensive overview of work done across all of the NCES. Each issue includes short publications and summaries covering all NCES publications nad data products released during a 3-month period as well as notices about training and funding opportunities. In additionk, each issue includes a featured topic with invited commentary, and a note onthe topic from NCES.
- Go to the National Center for Education Statistics web site.
- Select "Education Statistics Quarterly" from the "ED Stats at a Glance" label.
- Take advantage of the "View Quarterly by >> Topics" link (at the top of the page)
