Your Newspaper Project
Directions: You and your group members will pretend that you are members of the Danish Resistance. You will create a newspaper based on the events that are occurring in Denmark during the Holocaust. To find information about the Holocaust during this time, use your Number the Stars book, the information and website provided on this WebQuest, and any other available print information.
Your newspaper must include the following things:
1. At least 4 articles about Denmark and the Holocaust
2. At least one graphic
3. A title (decided upon by your group)
4. Correct spelling and grammar
5. All complete sentences
6. At least 6 words from the Glossary section of this WebQuest
You should be creative! Make sure your newspaper is focused on the events and happenings that occurred in Denmark during the Holocaust. Have fun with this assignment!
Follow these steps to get started with your newspaper project:
1. Look over your journal entries as a group. What were the important ideas in each journal entry?
2. Decide what kinds of articles you would like to include in your newspaper? What should be the main idea of each article? Discuss these details with your group members.
3. Look through your Number the Stars book, the websites and information provided on this WebQuest, and any other available print material for things that you can use in your articles. Your articles should be based on events that actually occurred in Denmark during the Holocaust. Make sure you are not just making up your articles.
4. Decide what you think the people in Denmark would like to hear. Does what they want to hear fit with the main ideas that you have already thought about? If not, you should change your main ideas. Remember that the purpose of this newspaper is to inform the people of Denmark about what is happening with the Nazi soldiers and the Holocaust in Europe.
5. Start writing one article as a group. Make sure to group related ideas into paragraphs. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence. Each paragraph should focus on ONE idea. Look at the Glossary section of this WebQuest. What words could you use in this article?
6. Reread your article to see if it makes sense. What grammar or spelling errors do you see? Are all the sentences complete?
7. Look at the Microsoft Publisher program on your computer. Do you know how to use it? If not, get help from your teacher or another knowledgeable student.
8. Type your article into Microsoft Publisher. Create your article as a Newsletter.
9. Proofread your article. Is there any spelling or grammar errors? If so, make sure you use a dictionary to look up the correct spelling of the word. Did you use commas and periods in the correct places? Are all of your sentences complete?
10. Start writing your second article. For this article, complete steps 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 above.
11. Start writing your third article. For this article, complete steps 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 above.
12. Start writing your fourth article. For this article, complete steps 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 above.
13. Decide what graphic you would like to us in your newspaper. You may look in the clip art section of this computer or on the Internet. If you need help with this section, ask a teacher or another student.
14. Make a name for your newspaper. You must decide on this name as a group.
15. Print off the final copy of your newspaper.
16. Look at the rubric for this project under the Evaluation section of this WebQuest. Does your newspaper include all of the things that the rubric say it must have? Look under the column that says "Newspaper" and the row that says "20 pts." If not, you should go back and make sure you have all of these things in your newspaper.
