Process

The class will be divided into groups of three that will research and examine ways to help and prevent rape and other types of sexual assaults. Prior to beginning this project, you group should have completed your literacy circle reading of Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak. Through reading this text you should now have an inside look at Melinda Sordino, a victim of sexual assault; what happens to her life and how it effected the people who loved her. Each group member will choose a specific role to investigate. Using the resources provided in this WebQuest, each group will create an informative pamphlet, poster, and presentation about what was learned.

  1. Form a group with two other classmates for a total of three members. In choosing group members remember that the groups will need to be able to work cooperatively for a period of time to complete all that is required in the WebQuest.
  2. Each group member must select one of the following roles: Member # 1 will be in charge of learning about self defense. Member #2 will focus on what to do if you or someone you know is a victim of a sexual assault. He/she will be called the counselor. Member #3 will find out how to prevent a sexual assault.
  3. Click on the role selected to find out where to go to find information about self defense, what to do in case of an assault, or prevention techniques.
  4. Each group member is to research selected roles. While researching roles each group member is to keep a brief research log on key facts learned. After the research is completed a one page journal entry should be written that clearly shows that the student has learned a lot of useful information about his/her role.
  5. Once each group member has completed his or her research about the selected role and has written his or her journal entry the groups will come together and share with one another the information they have learned. This will be an informal presentation only to group members.
  6. Working together the group will then compile a list of the most important aspects of each role (what people should know). This list is what will be used when developing the pamphlet.
  7. Working independently each group member will write a second journal entry about the new things that were learned during the informal presentation. This journal entry should show that the student clearly learned and understood information from his/her group.
  8. The group members will work together to make a pamphlet using a word processing program such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft Publisher. The pamphlet should include relevant and useful information about all three roles.
  9. Along with the pamphlet the group members are to make a poster that has student made illustrations and poems. (Note: at least one poem and one illustration must be included on the poster, but the poster must have a total of three.)
  10. Each group will present their pamphlet and poster to the rest of the class. The class will vote on which group's poster is the "best." The winning poster will be displayed in a special location in the school and will be submitted for publication to the school newsletter.
  11. All posters will be displayed throughout the building.
