Mildred Taylor's, Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry is a wonderful tool to create a very engaging lesson about racism and civil rights. This book and the issues that are brought up can lead to great discussions and writing topics. This book can be made into a webquest similar to this one dealing with the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King jr., Jim Crow Laws, Rosa Parks, etc. The activity can be set up the exact same way with groups of 3 or 4. Each student will have a character from the book that they will be writing from the perspective of. Students can really get creative with this activity and learn so much about the Civil Rights Movement. The rubric found under "evaluation" can be used for this project with this book or any other book.

Racism is still an issue in student's lives and researching how far this country has come and those who got us there can be extremely eye-opening for students.
