In the late 1950s, the University's Board of Trustees approved plans for the construction of a series of buildings to make
up a "science complex" that would serve as a center for the various science departments on-campus. Unfortunately, a lack of
funding prevented construction of the Physical Science Laboratory before the early 1980s. Thus, with the Planetarium's construction
in 1984, completion of the "science complex" did not occur until well after originally intended. The building has been used
mainly by the Chemistry Department, however it also

serves as an aid for industrial research in Physics and Astronomy. Moreover, the building serves the larger Bowling Green
community by sponsoring and holding special programs for observing the universe and educating the public in the world of science.

Listed below are additional highlights in the history of the building:
- 1981, Board of Trustees approves plans for the construction of the final building or part of a "science complex."
- 1984, construction completed at a final cost of $7.2 million. Building will house 18 research labs, 9 rooms for "non-portable"
science equipment, a planetarium, and roof-top observatory.
