Centennial Perspectives

Student Life: Student Government

The Student Council was founded in 1936.  Each class continued to elect officers to lead and organize its social activities.  By this time, students also felt a need for a university-wide governing organization to work on common problems and to represent the student voice to faculty and administration.  World War II created serious disruptions in all campus activities.  Male students enlisted or were drafted into the armed forces.  Two military training programs brought hundreds of men to the campus and they often participated in "civilian" campus activities.  The academic calendar was adjusted to accommodate their schedules.  Following the war, an influx of veterans also affected the tenor of campus life and student government went through a number of adjustments.
