A general story of the student affairs profession exists, but like other accounts of history, it is subject to continuous revision and refinement. This constant rewriting is as it should be. We know some accounts have been marginalized, omitted, even lost in translation. It is incumbent upon us to fill in the gaps, to reinterpret the narrative, to make the story of those who came before us just a little more accurate. Knowing our foundation is vital to envisioning our future.

The mission of the Student Affairs History Project is to preserve the past and enrich the future through the provision of resources to assist those interested in conducting research on the history of the student affairs profession.

The Student Affairs History Project is intended for use by:

  • Students and professionals who wish to learn more about our professional history
  • Researchers who would benefit from resources and starting points
  • Curious-types who would like to join the effort to identify missing pieces and missing stories
  • Fresh eyes willing to consider alternative interpretations and offer other perspectives
  • Those who would like to share their findings and interact with others with like interests

Historical research involves working with primary sources, and visiting archives is often a necessary step in the process. This site contains tips on how best to use your limited time and resources in order to maximize your time in an archival setting.

Our headings explained:

  • About explains the mission and scope of the Student Affairs History Project. You are here now.
  • Research Corner includes a bibliographic guide to archival research, tips on how to conduct archival research, and updates on ongoing research projects.
  • Keepsakes will eventually include a gallery of photos and artifacts.
  • Resources contains links to foundational documents and related web links.
  • Archives links to the National Student Affairs Archives and offers ideas about initiating and maintaining personal and institutional archives.
  • Contact (only on the bar at the bottom of the page) is a direct connection to our e-mail.

This project is evolving and would benefit from your feedback and ideas. Contact us: mcoomes@bgsu.edu
