The Interurban: Mass Transit in the Early 20th Century

As America looks for alternatives to gas-guzzling automobiles, we can look to our own past for examples of inexpensive mass
transit systems. See our current issue of the Archival Chronicle for an introduction to the Interurban Railway.
At one time there were nearly 2,800 miles of high-speed light rail systems connecting communities throughout the state and
joining local urban transit lines. Will the 21st century see their re-emergence? Our Gallery highlights photographs and images
from our collections illustrating "the cars" inside and out, from design, to manufacture, to daily use. Another popular means
of getting around, the bicycle, is also featured.
