 In addition to vessel histories, the HCGL maintains a reference collection that includes Merchant Vessels of the U.S., Canadian
List of Shipping, Lake Underwriters, Lloyd's Register, Great Lakes Redbook, Greenwood's Guide and a 550-volume collection
of news clippings from lake ports arranged chronologically from the 1830's to the 1980's. Online databases of vessels, ports, and maritime personnel provide indexed access to the information found in many of these resources. Finding aids are available for processed manuscript collections; preliminary inventories have been compiled for most of the unprocessed collections. Also, there are special lists and inventories
for the HCGL's audiovisual materials, microfilm collection, and oversize materials.
