William Shanks was a first cousin of William Weddell (his mother was Jeannette Weddell, sister of the senior Weddell). A private in Company K, William was killed at Chickamauga, Ga., in September 1863. George Shanks, the brother of William, also served in Company K as a corporal. He was killed at Chickamauga within ten minutes of his brother. A few letters of both William and George are available in the Weddell Collection (MS 484).
