Introduction | Biographical Sketch | Scope and Content | Series Description | Inventory
The Jack Vivian Photograph Collection was donated by Jim Gordon and covers the date range of 1968-1969. The collection consists of notes from an interview Jim Gordon conducted with Bowling Green State University hockey coach Jack Vivian, a BGSU club hockey team program, a news clipping, and several folders of photographic materials relating to Jack Vivian and the BGSU hockey team.
The material was donated to the Center for Archival Collections in October 2009 by Jim Gordon. No restrictions exist for the research use of this collection.
The register was created by Dana Nemeth, Library Associate II, and Latifah Street, Student Archival Assistant, in February 2010.
James R. Gordon is emeritus professor of journalism at BGSU, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Photojournalism in 1956. After working as a reporter, photographer and editor at newspapers in Elyria and Columbus, he returned to BGSU in 1959 as Director of News and Photography Services and adviser to The Key yearbook. Gordon
joined the BGSU School of Journalism faculty in 1966, retiring in 1991.
Jack Vivian completed his Master of Arts at Bowling Green State University in 1967 and was soon hired as an instructor in the Health and Physical Education Department. He began his coaching career at Bowling Green with the University’s club hockey team, and continued by helping the program move to the varsity level. Vivian led his first two teams to titles at the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association. After playing an instrumental role in the creation of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), Jack Vivian and his 1972-1973 season team won the first CCHA tournament. In 2008, Vivian was inducted into the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame for his outstanding service to the University’s hockey program.
The material in the collection was compiled by Jim Gordon while working on the photo-story “BG’s Big Hockey Buildup” for The Blade Sunday Magazine that ran in its February 23, 1969 edition. According to Gordon, he came up with the idea for the story and pitched it to the newspaper. Highlights from the collection include handwritten notes of Gordon’s interview with Jack Vivian, and photographs and negatives of the team and Jack Vivian during games and practices. There are also images of the hockey team enjoying Thanksgiving dinner at the Vivian house in November 1968.
Researchers interested in Jack Vivian and the history of BGSU hockey will find this collection useful.
