 Introduction/History

The North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) collection was donated to the Center for Archival Collections in August 1989. The collection consists of constitutions, minutes, correspondence, reports, conference programs and files, subject files, publications and audio-visual materials, documenting the establishment of the NASSM and its growth and development. The files date from 1985 to the present.

In 1985, at a series of meetings held in Windsor and Bowling Green (Ohio), the founders of this association met to discuss the merits, challenges and logistics of forming a professional organization. From these discussions, the North American Society for Sport Management was formed and Kent State University (Ohio) was selected as the site of the first NASSM conference in 1986. Now, more than twenty years later, NASSM has the leading academic journal and conference in the sport management field, serves over 400 members, and has many international linkages with sport management colleagues and associations in other countries and regions.

NASSM is actively involved in supporting and assisting professionals working in the fields of sport, leisure and recreation. The purpose of the North American Society for Sport Management is to promote, stimulate, and encourage study, research, scholarly writing, and professional development in the area of sport management - both theoretical and applied aspects. Topics of interest to NASSM members include sport marketing, future directions in management, employment perspectives, management competencies, leadership, sport and the law, personnel management, facility management, organizational structures, fund raising, and conflict resolution.
