Introduction

The records of St. Paul Catholic Church, 1891 - 2001, were transferred for microfilming to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43403, in January 2002, with the cooperation of Father Stephen Stanbery of St. Paul Catholic Church.

The collection consists of baptisms*, First Penance and Catechumens, first communions, confirmations, marriages*, deaths and interments. Due to inconsistencies in pagination and transcription of data, researchers are encouraged to refer to all volumes within each series. (See order of microfilming for a detailed list of these records.) Some text is in Latin. There is a note in the Record Book, dated 1899 - 2001 that states that records (1893 - 1899) for St. Paul Catholic Church, Hamler, Ohio can be found at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Catholic Church, North Baltimore, Ohio.

Agency History

Catholic settlers in Hamler began arriving as early as 1866. The Catholics in Hamler did not have a church of their own so they had to travel seven miles to attend church in New Bavaria. In 1886, the Catholics in Hamler petitioned the Bishop for permission to build a church of their own. Bishop Gilmour gave his permission and they began to build the church. Their first church was completed in December 1886.

Even after the completion of the church building, Hamler was not visited regularly by a priest until 1889. In 1889, a resident priest was assigned to St. Mary Catholic Church in Holgate and St. Paul Catholic Church in Hamler became a Mission of Holgate. In 1893, care for the Mission of Hamler was transferred to Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in North Baltimore.

In 1902, St. Paul Catholic Church finally received their first resident pastor. His name was Father Albert Zemp.

In 1922, due largely to the growth of the congregation, the parish began planning the building of a new church. The new church was completed in 1924. This church building is still in use today.

In 1970, St. Paul Catholic Church became a Mission of St. Mary Catholic Church in Holgate. Hamler remains a sister parish of Holgate through the present.
