 Introduction

The records of St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1857 - 2001, were transferred for microfilming to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43403, in October 2001, with the cooperation of Father T. Patrick Scharf of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

The collection consists of baptisms*, first communions, confirmations, marriages*, and deaths. Due to inconsistencies in pagination and transcription of data, researchers are encouraged to refer to all volumes within each series. (See order of microfilming for a detailed list of these records.)

This register and this collection was prepared by Jennifer Golis in October 2001.

*There is a seventy (70) year access restriction on baptism and marriage records. No restrictions apply to the remainder of this collection.

 Agency History

St. Augustine Catholic Church began as a Station of Toledo, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, in 1841. Beginning in 1850, the parish began being served by Defiance. In 1854,the parish became a Station of Providence. It reverted back to a Station of Defiance in 1856. It was in 1856, that the parish built its first church. In 1861, the parish became a Mission of Providence. In 1864, the parish received their first resident pastor, Father J.P. Carroll. In 1883, the congregation built its current church building.

Since 1883, the church has been remodeled and renovated several times, as well as the school and rectory.
