 Introduction

The records of St. Mary Catholic Church, 1853 - 2001, were transferred for microfilming to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43403, in August 2001, with the cooperation of Reverend Philip Feltman of St. Mary Catholic Church, Sandusky, Ohio.

The collection consists of baptisms*, first communions, confirmations, marriages*, interments and deaths. Due to inconsistencies in pagination and transcription of data, researchers are encouraged to refer to all volumes within each series. (See order of microfilming for a detailed list of these records.)

This register and this collection was prepared by Jennifer Golis in August 2001.

*There is a seventy (70) year access restriction on baptism and marriage records. No restrictions apply to the remainder of this collection.

 Agency History

Between 1841 and 1853 a large number of German Catholic immigrants settled in the Sandusky area. They began attending Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sandusky. In 1853, the German members of the parish petitioned Bishop Rappe for permission to establish their own congregation and to hold separated services in Holy Angels Catholic Church until they could build their own church.

The German congregation received their first pastor in December of 1853. In 1855, they built their first church. In1873, a second church was built. Throughout the years after 1873, as the congregation size increased, improvements and enlargements were done to the church and school.
