Introduction | Agency History | Order of Microfilming

Introduction

The records of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1841 - 2001, were transferred for microfilming to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43403, in July 2001, with the cooperation of Reverend Jeffery P. Sikorski of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maumee, Ohio.

The collection consists of baptisms*, first communions, confirmations, professions of faith, marriages*, interments and deaths. Due to inconsistencies in pagination and transcription of data, researchers are encouraged to refer to all volumes within each series. (See order of microfilming for a detailed list of these records.)

This register and this collection was prepared by Jennifer Golis in July 2001.

*There is a seventy (70) year access restriction on baptism and marriage records. No restrictions apply to the remainder of this collection.

Agency History

St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maumee, Ohio began in 1831 as a Station of St. Mary Catholic Church in Tiffin. In 1841, St. Joseph Catholic Church became a Mission of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Toledo. St. Joseph parish received their first resident pastor, Reverend Sebastian Sanner, in 1850.

Until 1892, mass was held in a meeting house purchased in 1841 from the Episcopalians of Maumee. In 1888, work began on their second church. It was dedicated in 1892 by Monsignor F.M. Boff, V.G. In 1933, a fire destroyed the church steeple and it was not rebuilt.

The growth of St. Joseph Catholic Church over the past 160 years has been steady.
