Introduction
The records of St. Mary Catholic Church and St. James Catholic Church, 1859 - 2001, which also includes the Mission of Immaculate
Conception in Bettsville, 1878 - 1896, were transferred for microfilming to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green
State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43403, in June 2001, with the cooperation of Reverend Theodore J. Miller of St. Mary
Catholic Church, Millersville, Ohio.
The collection consists of baptisms*, first communions, confirmations, marriages*, interments and deaths. Due to inconsistencies in pagination and transcription of data, researchers are encouraged to refer
to all volumes within each series. Some of the record books may contain information for more than one parish. Researchers
are again encouraged to check all volumes. (See order of microfilming for a detailed list of these records.)
This register and this collection was prepared by Jennifer Golis in June 2001.
*There is a seventy (70) year access restriction on baptism and marriage records. No restrictions apply to the remainder of
this collection.
Agency History
The histories of St. Mary Catholic Church in Millersville and St. James Catholic Church in Kansas have been linked together
since 1889.
The parish of St. Mary began as a Mission of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fremont, Ohio in 1857. In 1858, the parish built
its first church. The church was originally called the Nativity Church of Greensburg, but in 1863 the church name was changed
to St. Mary and the township name was changed to Millersville.
St. Mary received their first resident pastor, Father Fridolin Ankly, in 1863. Between 1869 and 1870 St. Mary lost their resident
pastor and became a Mission of Fostoria. In 1870, Reverend J.B. Jung became pastor of St. Mary. Beginning in 1878, several
Missions were assigned to Millersville parish. Immaculate Conception in Bettsville was a Mission between 1878 and 1897. St.
Michael in Gibsonburg was a Mission between 1877 and 1892. St. James in Kansas began as a Mission of St. Mary's parish in
1889 and has remained a Mission ever since.
In 1920, St. Mary built their current church and in 1952 they built their current school.
