 Introduction

The records of St. Richard Catholic Church, 1909 - 2001, were transferred for microfilming to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43403, in May 2001, with the cooperation of Reverend Daniel J. Zak of St. Richard Catholic Church, Swanton, Ohio.

The collection consists of baptisms * , first communions, confirmations, marriages * , deaths and interments. Due to inconsistencies in pagination and transcription of data, researchers are encouraged to refer to all volumes within each series. (See order of microfilming for a detailed list of these records.)

This register and this collection was prepared by Jennifer Golis in May 2001.

* There is a seventy (70) year access restriction on baptism and marriage records. No restrictions apply to the remainder of this collection.

 Agency History

St. Richard Catholic Church began as a Station of St. Mary's Corner in April, 1890. In the same year the catholic families of Swanton, Ohio petitioned the bishop of the Cleveland Diocese for permission to build a church of their own. Permission was granted and building began in 1891. The first mass was said in the church in May, 1893. With the completion of the church, St. Richard became a Mission of St. Mary's Corner.

St. Richard Catholic Church received their first resident pastor in August, 1909. His name was Reverend John Berthelot.

Ground was broken for the second and current church in March, 1965. It was completed in 1966. The new church was built to accommodate the growing membership of the parish.
